 Deer hunting in Germany

I was in Germany last week on business and while passing through the Southern part I saw lots of deer stands. Also saw two gents with some type of long guns in the distance. Sorry could not get a pic. Also saw lots of deer fencing and my coworkers said it can be a problem in the highways. I've seen the stands before on previous trips but for whatever reason have yet to take a pic. Maybe it that I'm usually blowing by stuff over 100 mph. Here are a few pics from the Christmas market in Strasbourg (France).

My sons best friend growing up was from Germany,his uncle was the Jager for the area where they lived and was the only person who could legally shoot critters.They were near the Black Forest.I'm not sure if they allow outsiders to hunt though.Great pictures BTW.I've never been to Europe but would love to visit the Alsation area of France.Guess I'll have to stick with Castroville Texas for that.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it.

Spent 13 years in Germany with the Army. Did some hunting there. They have a lot of traditions and customs. It is a very beautiful sight to see with the bugles and the dogs howling with the mist coming off the forest. They show the upmost respect for the animals when they are harvested. All you get to keep is the Trophy from the animal. You may buy the meat if you want. The forest meister owns the animals. There is not any "public" Hunting in Europe. The Forest Meister has send in a quota to The Govenment. They say ya or na. You must shoot a fawn if they tell you too. So much different than in the States. Pm me if you want to know more.

Spent over 6 years in Germany while with the military, it's just as luvpigmeet says, very traditional and custom driven. I spent my first Christmas in the military in Strousburg, France at a French military post, part of a soldier exchange program going on then. They pulled all the stops out for us, never been more likkered up as I was with those guys. The military was definately an adventure.

I went to Germany in 2005. Wife was on a business trip and I went along/hunting with one of her co-workers.  Too much paperwork and red tape to carry a gun and hunt. Joseph:  He had to lease land from the Govmnt (500 hectacres). The lease makes him responsible for "protecting" the landowners crops from deer and "porks". He carried a 12ga/6mm over-and-under with Zeiss optics. And had his ever present dog. Walk into the lobby, and hotel with the dog in tow every step of the way. The Black Forest area outside of Fresing is one of the most beautiful places I've had the pleasure to visit. Rolling hills, cropland, and forested draws. The stand:  on Stand:  It was Oktoberfest so there were other activities planned so I only got to go out 2 times.  I had to get a Jagerhut (Yager-hoot) like Joseph had.  The wife was Soooo proud to have me at her side the rest of the trip sporting my new Jagerhut. I'd go back if it wasn't for the flight.

Of course, if you're a gunner on a Bradley Fighting Vehicle, conducting Bradley Table 12 (Night), it's a lot easier to shoot deer. Just sayin'.

Overall hunting restrictions are quite more strict than in the States. You could buy reasonably priced hunts in Eastern Europe. Boar, elk, moose, deer, upland birds, hare etc. I'll be heading to company HQ (Munich) shortly. Might even move there for a bit but if I do, I would most likely do my hunting in Northern Europe (Finland, Sweden, Norway).

WOW! The memories that are coming back. I was an instructor on the Bradley at Vilseck. I remember the times going to GRAF. Actually was stationed there for a while. As far as the Hunting Test. I did through the Sportman's clubn on post at Graf. Only takes Americans a couple of weekends. But the Germans spend a lot of money and time to get their license. Weildmans Heil!(I think I spelled it right).

Gun pointed right at his head. I have a Blaser BBF97 12 ga over 308 combo gun and K95 30-06 single shot, and the safeties are different on those guns. When on "safe", the firing pin is totally disengaged. When you take the gun "off safe", you are actually cocking the gun. The guy in the picture is as safe as someone carrying a Remington 700 unloaded.

Seeing deer down range sucked. You'd have to cease fire, then wait for them to move away, have the range guy go check to make sure nothing was dead and if it was there were reports to be made and the Army had to pay Germany for teh dead deer. All that made for a long, long night instead of shoot and get off the hell off the range. We did however try to take out some hogs with cleaning rods and blanks one night during a Reforger or Caravan Guard, they squealed loud but we never got one to drop. Trying to hunt in Germany was tough, I was excited when I first got stationed over there the first time, but after seeing what it would take and the amount of $$$, I gave up.

You were one of the lucky ones when I was there, I was with the 1st AD and we still had the 113's. I remember at night by the mess halls the boars would come out and go thru the garbage, especially during the winter. Now if that don't make you pucker....

It was actually preety inexpensive for Military to hunt. A short class and pay for your license. allowed to take one Roe deer and a 2b stag. Did prettyy good there. Wished I coul've got the meat.

I don't know what you consider inexpensive. It was '88 the last time I looked into it, but there was like a $80-100 class, then the actual hunt through the Rec Center was was in the $250 range, I don't remember the exact numbers but remember it to being about 1 payday worth of cash. Neither of which sounds like a lot of money but when your take home check was in the $300 range every 2 weeks it was a healthy portion what could amount to a single day and no animal.

I took the class in 1991. I can't remember the exact cost of the class. I was a Fish Warden for the MWR,I had a price break. But with the License came a permit for Roe Deer. I shot a hog and a Red Deer calf. I beleive I spent under $100 total. Saw one Roe Buck. A sixer. Spooked befor I could get a shot. Man I love those little Deer. I did not get paid to be a Fish Warden. It was done on my off time. What a blast.

Spent time in Germany but never hunted there. Went along on some hunts and lived with the Forrest Master in Romania though. That was a great place to hunt.

One of the guys on our lease last year was a retired USAF Colonel. He was stationed in Germany for a good many years and was in to hunting. He said that he hunted the land under control of the base but there typically wasn't as much game there as off base.
Anyway, he said that in order to hunt off base you had to go through the German's program which started you out with marksmanship test and weapon handling, target shooting, etc. Eventually you'd be permitted to birds and small game with shotguns and .22's. Progressively you'd be allowed to hunt larger game, using larger, more powerful weapons.

I grew up in Germany and you pretty much got it right on. Still remember seeing whole skinned deer and wild pigs laying on the tables outside of stores for sale. I still follow some of the traditional hunting practices when I hunt. Miss the old country especially around this time of year. Evelyn

One of the best things I saw was a group of young guys and their dogs riding in the train and guns in thier laps on their way to go hunting. This was just a year ago!
