Wow.. ok I'm the "Great Guy"
Well I guess I'd be "The Ear" everyone complains to me because they know I don't care what I say and I'll tell the offender outright.

I have had a great year at my lease this year . I am "the old man " . There are 4 other members which is my son and 3 of his friends , one of them is the lease manager .
They all are 25-30 years old and are doing something constantly and when I try and help it is " we got it , just sit and take it easy - do you need another beer " . I have found a couple projects like electrical hook ups and cooking they will let me do and I feel like I am being useless but i know they enjoy doing everything themselves and my son is like wanting to "pay me back " for all the hunting I took him on .
I might have to get on another lease next year so I don't feel so damned useless .They treat me like Papa and I am only 55 and can still do most anything I ever did . Bad problem right ?

And let's not forget "The perfect one", which we don't have in our group. But judging from most of posts here seem to exist in abundance.

I'd rather sit in the blind with a new hunter and watch them shoot a deer then shoot one myself. Sometimes I just go sit and watch deer and drink beer. My lease partner fills his tags every year and shoots something every time he hunts. What are our types?

We don't have any perfect ones, but seldom any drama or problems...

We would be the preacher, the teacher, the coach, the accountant, the machinist, the asset protection specialist, the pharmacist, the nurse, the cartographer, two Baptist song leaders, and 3 High School Principal's.... and a gunsmith.

And there's only ten of us.

At least five of us actually have books to read at camp....
But there's a cooler or two of beer, a bottle or two of hard stuff, a Mary Kay bag of make-up, three grills, two stoves, and a permanent dog kennel. And beds for 17.

I wasn't thinking of your post at all Sig. More the ones who seem lofty enough to establish their own who's who at the lease. I just have issues with those who seem to be able to tag someone else while they remain "the voice of reason" in their own minds.

They may find out one day that , "the ramrod, and the jester, and the drunk" refer him as "the guy with the stick up his arse"

We also have a biologist who is actually a biologist. That guy gets asked so many questions I feel bad for him. He's like the wikipedia of wildlife management. Settles alot of bets.

This is really the fun of the deer lease, the list of characters that show up that provide us with both entertainment and memories. Keeping in mind that many vagaries ( a word everybody should know ) of human behavior the list and type of persons is utterly endless. But there is one personality that deserves a well deserved toast, the ones that really matter, the ones we will never forget. That person is the absent companion, the ones that will not hunt with in this lifetime, but wait for us with old whiskey, perfect cigars, warm campfires and better BS.
Here's to absent companions.

And also there's "Tha Cook"...a guy who thinks he can cook but really can't. He uses so much garlic to cover up his lame effort at cooking that you never go to the lease w/o a pocket full of Rolaids. BUT, he always insists on cooking and very rarely hunts. Heck, we used to accuse him of puttin' garlic in the pancakes.

I'm the cook and clean fanatic, always cleaning up the messes left by the kids and hunters. and yes, my cooking is requested.

I start the fires, do improvements around the camp (but no electricity stuff)and bring stuf to do it, like a second home.

As someone said, I'm also the ear, folks complain to me because I don't care about feelings in the camp and will call a spade a spade, I'm there to relax, don't need any drama.

I'm the one that starts the camp fire ( I get cold fast!) so they leave it up to me.

We picked up two newbys this year, and one is a freeloader, does not clean, contribute, just comes to hunt and mooch.

The other thinks he can run the ranch better than the biologist, and lease manager. Always griping about this or that, and bumming corn as well.

We will be back to just the few of us after this season is over, and camp life will be normal again

Haven't seen anyone mention the 'quiet one'.

He sits around listening to everything going on around him and rarely offers any insights of his own. He prefers to take mental notes on who's on the up and up and who he should avoid as being incompatible with his nature and/or hunting ethos.

Busts his butt on the lease without having to be asked. Works hard to improve conditions that will benefit the wildlife and himself in the long run.

Willing to tackle just about anything on his own, but is also one of the first to offer assistance when it's clear it's needed.

Takes joy in others success regardless of the type of year he's having.

That used to be me until this deer season rolled around. I try hard to avoid drama at the lease but this year has been a complete joke. I made a long post about the details earlier so I won't go into them again here.

Hopefully I can find a good lease next year and get back to being me.

Another good friend of mine is a great cook. In fact, he can cook so dang good that I always tell him he would make some guy a great wife.

I bet too that the best cooks in camp are also the ones that can skin and clean a deer like no one else.

I'm "The Owner" banana

At least, sorta, my wife is the heir to a few hundred acres of a much larger tract of family land. The rest of the family is too busy trying to make money that they don't hunt anymore, the most use of the land(other than cattle and hunting) that the land sees is a couple of the wife's brothers or sisters will come down over the summer and camp for a couple of weekends.

Not a bad deal, just can't take too many folks out there. I've hunted with two guys off and on over the past 10 years, and they both have their own key to the gate. But, at the same time, one has paid for both bridges and the culverts, as well as having a tank dug. The other has a tractor that stays out there, as well as a small, old dozer that we use to keep the shooting lanes clear, and he paid for the electricity and water to be hooked up.

So, it's a pretty nifty setup for the family when they want to camp(fresh water and electricity) and they and I get to hunt all year long

I'm not sure what you'd call them, but I call them 'good friends'

I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.

I am the internet biologist. I know nothing about deer, think I know everything, can score every deer within 3", my guesstimate on age is always spot on, and you can't prove me wrong because if you try...I can always find proof on the internet to reinforce my case grin

We have a pretty large group of hunters. We have seen all that were mentioned here, but think we have seen some on the place that weren't mentioned:

The "perfect hunter". There are two types of "perfect hunters." Type one is the know it all that has hunted across America, critics the way everyone hunts, is determined everyone else should rearrange their set up to fit his ideas, believes that you can't really hunt in Texas, etc.

The second type of "perfect hunter" is the one that is never there. He pays for a spot, sets up in his hunting area, but spends his time in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, and only shows up on New Years with enough Elk meat for the whole camp.

There is also " The Player." He's a guy for whom hunting is secondary and uses the lease as a way of getting out of the house. We had a guy who left to go hunting on Thursday at noon and got to camp on Friday afternoon. By noon on Saturday he was showered and left for home returning on Sunday night to say " Hi honey I'm home." The problem was that it took less than 5 hours to drive from home to the lease. It was those two long stops that made up the difference. He kept a whole wardrobe at the lease that wasn't hunting clothing. I think he chose the place because of no phone and poor cell coverage.

Then there's "The All-Around Badass" that's good at everything, gets along with everyone, and loves ARs.

I'm that guy everywhere I go.
