i bought a ghillie suit and planned on getting close and personal with a doe this weekend.......... question is, can i shoot buck shot out of a smooth bore 26" barrel? if so, what choke should i use? i'm going for a close-in head shot.

for OO or OOO buck full will group well out to 30 yards,, #1 and singleO works good on thin skinned animals such as deer. I still like OO and full but mostly use it on hogs

You could try to pattern the gun. Shoot at a big peice of paper and determine which choke, and shot is best for your needs.

indeed... as long as it's OK to shoot through a full choke... that's what i'd like to use.

00 buck works great but I would use a more open choke like a modified. In Georgia we hunt mostly with buckshot. Copperplated buckshot also helps. Pattern your gun and see what it likes. I would also suggest a lung/heart shot. It will put it down quickly. A head shot could easily go thru the jaw and only wound leaving it to starve to death. Buckshot isn't precision like rifle bullets.

IMO. Bad Idea. Your not going to be very accurate. Good luck.

i planned on waiting for a less than 20 yard shot, or i will not take it.. that's why i want to go for the head, i don't want to waste any meat on a doe.
i plan on getting into bow hunting soon (maybe next year), and with my ghillie suit, i wanted to get some practice in over the next few hunts....
thanks for the tips - i'll go ahead and try the modified and full chokes to see which one i like better.

I'd go with an IC or Mod at most less than 30 yards. You'll be as well off with #4 buck though. It has .250" balls and more balls/shell. Used that load on coyotes at night, or off a snow mobile running them across the ice.

I have killed many deer with buckshot as our land back home in Alabama is pretty wooded. I will give you one huge hint: DON'T ASSUME THAT JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE USING BUCKSHOT THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO AIM!! Sure it has a wide pattern but put the bead right on it and hold it tight. I also love the 00 buckshot. Go for the neck shot.....not a head shot. Just my 2 cents.

You can use buckshot effectively beyond these ranges discussed, depending on the load, the sights, and the practice. Just like Bama said, don't [censored]-u-me....practice.
I like 00 and 000....just more hole I guess. I think IC barrels with Rifle Sights are the easiet to shoot. If I had to shoot a smooth-no-sight barrel, I'd look for snap on beads for the rib or a bolt on scope base for a red dot...Wal-mart usually has them on closeout nowadays, after their marketing expert told them they needed 12 shotgun scope mounts per store in Texas...

There is some exellent hunting around San Angelo on state land. Buckshot only. The local guys I have met (that fill their tags) say an old wore out shotgun with a improved cylynder works best on 00. A choke causes one side of some pellets to flatten causing the shot to spin off. With open bore they put 2 or three pellets right where they aim, even at farther distance. I personally did not like the way my mossberg patterned with modified choke. Niether did the old refrigerator I tested it on.

Is shooting deer on ice chasing em with a snowmobile legal? or even ethical? Sounds kinda fishy.

Thought, or maybe, hoped, he was still referring to coyote shooting.
