Hit the lake for my first real solo duck hunt. For once everything went as planned: Hit the road on time, nobody parked at the public entrance, no one in the spot I scouted, homemade blind set up perfectly, got my dekes out 30 min before l.s.t. At 6:45 there were 3 times as many ducks on the water as decoys. I didn't shoot anything then, since it was still so dark, I could't tell what kind of ducks they were. Oh, and I was having a blast just watching them come in and land and swim around my dekes. It was awsome!! I was on the "X", but my shooting was more like "S". Once I got in "Duck" mode and started showing a little patience and waited for the birds to come, I did well. I learned alot. A more experianced hunter would have done better and could have limited out. But there is no way anyone could have been more happy than me!!

Man that is awesome. Reading your post brought me back to why I got into waterfowl hunting in the first place. That excitement and anticipation before LST is a big part of the hunt. Don't sweat the limit thing, you shot some cool birds.

Good job, I've always told people that the best way to learn is by yourself. I actually don't mind hunting solo sometimes. Even though I've done it many many times I still take something away from the hunt. It's a great sport. Keep it up man

Great story. Enjoy the 3 duck days. There will be plenty of zero duck days.

Thanks guys. Am I right to think that the far right bird is an eclipse Canvasback?
Either way it is packed in three zip-lock bags in the freezer waiting on the $$ for a trip to the taxi.
The other two are butchered and frozen waiting on the gumbo pot.

Well Done. I've been hunting ducks for 35 years and I still feel the same excitement like the first day. It's gonna get better.

My advice on the canvasback would be not to mount that one don't get me wrong they r kinda rare to shoot but just keep him in the freezer till after next year and then mount him if you haven't shot another better looking one
But wither way nice hunt and congrats

They're not looking for one thing right....they're looking for one thing wrong.
