I usually don't but I got to thinking that those calories could come in handy if there was a lot of work to do...
Just taking a poll...

I always do so she will have something on her stomach to create a little warmth. I don't like to work on an empty stomach so I figure my dog doesn't either. Not to mention she works her butt off and needs the carbs

Working is for people who don't hunt!!!

I feed mine just the same as I do everyday. I don't change a thing.

I read that it takes something like 12hrs for dogs to fully digest the food and benefit from the carb intake. I feed my dog in the afternoon everyday, roughly 12hrs before he'd need it. Not sure how true the 12hr thing is, but it's worked for me so far.

If I know she will have 2.5 - 3 hours to get some digested then I will give her 1/2 what she would normally get and then the other 1/2 when we get home.

NG...do you let her ride in the cab of the truck with you?

Unless your pooch is hypoglycemic, there is no need to feed one ounce of anything before a hunt. As mentioned it, on average, takes 12 or so hours for a dog to completely digest his food. Feeding to warm Fido is funny. roflmao Keep your dogs on the regular schedule of evening feeds and all is fine. If you're working your dogs often and hard, you might wanna switch over to an high carb performance food. Bart gets, and has always gotten for 12 years, Pro Plan beef and rice. A little dog biscuit here and there ev'r once in a while.

And yes, at 12+ years of age, Bart rides in the truck with me. He has since he was 10. Old dogs don't need to be cramped up in a cold dog box or crate no longer than they should have to.

This is what I do.

I already feed twice a day and so this way she gets 1/4 of her food before the hunt, 1/4 after and 1/2 in the evening. She is on a high energy/ low volume feed.

The idea is to avoid her getting a twisted gut.

If you are hunting a field and It will be a hard hunt where theres a lot of gunners it is best not to feed the dog before the hunt.We learned from field and hunt test runners that a dogs belly can turn over if to full and like Homey said it takes up to 12hrs for digestion.

If you ever experience seeing a dog with stomach torsion then you will never feed before a hunt...One of the most horrific things!!!When we were in college and didnt know better friend fed his dog before a evening dove hunt...1 hr into the hunt dog lays down in the field and yelps bloody murder...We rush the dog to vet in town and was dead before we got there...Bled out..We got a scolding for that Vet I will always remember...Turns out the dogs stomach wrapped in knots and tore...Not saying this cant happen on empty but much less likely...

What Easton says. I feed my dog once a day at night. My dog is so use to eating once a day at night, she will not even eat if you try to feed her in the morning. Plus, it is my understanding that dogs digest their food much slower than humans, I believe it is 12 hours. Not like 1 hour for a human. So if you feed your dog at night, their food will be fully digested and body nourished for the morning hunt.

I don't. I usually fed my older dog once at night. Since I've got a pup that I feed 3 times a day I've been giving the older one a little each time I feed the pup and just cut back on her normal helping for her main meal. If we are hunting I just feed them whatever they missed while hunting and then the scheduled feedings go as usual.

I feed my dogs the same time every day no matter what they are doing. During hunting season they get a little more feed. Sportdog pro mix is a great feed for quail dogs.
