I going to buy a semi auto .308, which do you recommend and why... Springfield M1A1 Socom II or Scout rifle... or an AR10 platform rifle?

I would go with a LMT LMT rifles My brother had a M1A1.. Great rifle, but kinda limited compared to a AR-10.. Still the wood was cool.. With it in your hand you realized how tough soldiers were to hump that thing everywhere.. It's as tough as nails and if you had to.. You could dig a trench with it.. You can stick what ever cool stuff you want on a ar-10 type rifle with ease.. Inline with the barrel.. Follow up shots would be easier with ar-10 style rifle..
When in doubt.. Empty the magazine

AR10 platform without question. Will be more accurate, scope mounting much better, suppresses better, mags cheaper, etc.
M1A's can be awesome, but a fortune will be spent getting it there.

Agreed the AR 10 platform has more options and accuracy and is probably cheaper. From an objective stand point the AR seems like a no brainer.
However, I would get an M1 because of personal bias. Not against the AR but I just always like the look of the M1/M14.
I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

If you actually plan on suppressing it or adding 3# of useless "cool" widgets to end, an AR.
If you're going to mount a scope and shoot it, either.

AR10 platform without question. Will be more accurate, Really, the AR10 more accurate? I find that hard to believe scope mounting much better, suppresses better, mags cheaper, etc.
M1A's can be awesome, but a fortune will be spent getting it there. Agree with all this.

Really, the AR10 more accurate? In my experience, yes. My 16" LMT .308 is a sub-moa rifle; my SOCOM II is not.

He said M1A (This implies full size in my mind). With a match barrel and the right ammo I would go head to head with an AR10. I do agree that the AR10 is going to cheaper but I do love my M1A!

Out of the box, AR10's are without question. M1A's can made to be very accurate with alot of work and money. You will likely spend 3k to get a M1A up to its full potential. I have owned several of both. Most AR10's are MOA or SUB MOA out of the box once you find what ammo it likes. M1a's need to be bedded, or a sage type system added etc. AR10 platform without question. Will be more accurate, Really, the AR10 more accurate? I find that hard to believe scope mounting much better, suppresses better, mags cheaper, etc.

He said M1A (This implies full size in my mind). His first sentence didn't stipulate, so in my mind, that implies he was referring to the OP's list of choices (SOCOM II and Scout). Just FYI, on the subject of cost, the LMT mentioned previously is $2,500.

I would go AR10. Larue Tactical Predatar (if weight is of concern) or an OBR (if long range precision is key).
LMT, Noveske, Colt, or KMC would also be top choices.

I agree with the ar10 style rifle. Aside from what has already been stated, tactical reloads can be done a bit faster with the ar10.

M1A, hands down. Don't take my word for it: There is a good reason that the M1A/M14 was brought back into service as the Designated Marksman Rifle for the Marine Corps.
You will sacrifice a little accuracy in exchange for the shorter barrel lengths on the Scout or SOCOM models.

I do not think you give up any accuracy with the shorter barrel but you do give up some veilcity.
Have an M1A Scout and love it.

They are very limited in use in the military now days, they aren't even produced for the military anymore. They are old ones that are retroffited. The SR25/M110 has replaced it now. (AR10 variant).

The M1A rifles in service are either older NM rifles or Loaded rifles in the EBR Sage chasis, either option is very expensive.

The Scout would make a fine truck gun except for the slinging of Brass. It does do a number on hogs though

My 2 cents worth, I have both, out of the box my AR-10 could group better than my M1A. BUT being a m14 nut, I was going to get it to shoot. In the early 90s I spent right at $2000 getting it "tuned"! Will it shoot a great group now,YES! With hunting ammo my AR-10 will shoot just as good. AR-10 $1200 vs. $3200 for my M1A "Match"
