my son has used my long range rifle; my wife has used my shortrange brush gun... other than that, I might loan out my spare if the person is trustworthy. Otherwise, I just say no...

I will loan out, maybe my 9mm Hi-Point Carbine, or my Marlin 30-30, but as stated in a post elsewhere I learned my lesson about making sure I am comfortable letting the person use it, and making sure they know HOW to use it. I.E. My younger brother borrowing my 30-30 and trying to load 9mm rounds into it. I had a helluva time trying to get those bullets out.

My 30-06, and my AR, nope, never, never, never, no, no, no , never.
Dont even ask, your wasting your breath.

Besides, you can a decent hunting rifle in .243, .270, or 30-06 for sometimes less than 275.00 with a scope at Academy, Cabelas, etc, so if someone keeps asking repeatedly, there is no reason why they should not have bought their own eventually.

Had a client bring a 30-378 to hunt whitetail haha he asked me to site it in and i figured out why...that is a cannon

Seems like moslty everyone is on the same page. someone real close that knows how to handle a rifle or has handled it before is fine as long as it is not the "go-to" ..buy a loaner just in case..sounds good to me, just wanted to see how everyone felt about it..

Yes I will loan out my guns. The people I hang out with take care of stuff and if they broke something would replace it. I have borrowed a rifle or shotgun before just to try something different and always treat it better than I treat my own guns. I do not baby mine, they are tools. I dont have a "go to" I just pick one out and take it.

I only let close family/friends borrow my guns. I have loaned out shotguns, but never a deer rifle.

I have been a pistol enthusiast for years but never hunted or had much desire to until recently. Am in my 60s with not much money. I did some research and discovered the Mosin-Nagant 9130 which you can get for about $90 plus an additional $20 or so and they will pick out a really nice one for you. These are great for first time hunter--actually anyone, as they are tough and really accurate if you mount a scope on them. No need to borrow a rifle for hunting, something I would never do anyway.

AVOID THE SIDE MOUNT SCOPE KITS as they will move around after a few shots. Drill, tap and mount the scope to the receiver.

Two of my friends have one of these rifles and lent it to me to try on the range. I was really grateful and took the best of care. One of the friends was delighted to take me to a private range for the afternoon where he taught me all kinds of good information. Admittedly, I am a novice. I plan to buy my first rifle this week and hunt the next year when I can afford the license and the deer processing.

By the way, I am fortunate to work with some people from Russia and France. The phonetically correct way to pronounce this is "Muusin-Na gone." Nagant was Belgium and French. Now you can show how sophisticated you are about this rifle even though your wife thinks you are a red-neck who won't go to the ballet with her! smile

Have fun and be safe and don't brush off someone who may become a lifelong hunter who can pass down the art to their children. I am grateful for the people who took time with me.

I have loaned a rifle on several occasions to new hunters. However, by the next year, they need to have their own.

Years ago my cousins and I hunted the NW corner of Co. in the Cathedral Mtns...He owed a guy a favor, and carried him and his
wife along..(guy now claims to be guide). Because of the costs
and where we hunt, I always carried two rifles..This guy and his
wife spent several days making fun of my weapons and scopes, because he had new Kleinguenters with new Redfield glass..It got
down to -25F..both his new scopes froze..I'd filled my tags and
He begged to borrow my favorite rifle and backup..I reluctantly
lent them..saw he and his spouse walking up the side of a ridge
using them as walking sticks...pads full of mud and snow...Quick
lesson...I shot a wounded elk for my cousin with my 300 Win at about 450yds..where he was down...and he couldn't understand why
he couldn't shoot the 257 Roberts that far w/87gr ammo..Lesson Learned...DD

individual basis for me. if i needed to borrow something in the past and you were stingy then no. i cant stand stingy people. i can deal with someone having an accident with my gun as long as they help replace it. I don't have anything expensive though, so i can understand how yall with the nice guns are protective. I am pretty leniant as long as you have some respect for me and the item i am lending.

I have 3 that I would loan my guns to, a life long school buddy(we have known each other for 55 years), his BIL (have known him for 40+ years) and a rather new hunting buddy (only known him for 12 years). They can borrow anything I own other than the wife and I do have a couple of high dollar customs. I have a granddaughter and her mother that have used my guns in the past but I was within arms reach of the guns and them at all times.

i will loan my rifles/shotguns to any of my friends anytime they ask. I trust my friends and know they will take care of my stuff and if something happens to it, i have no doubt they will take care of getting it fixed or replacing it. If i cant trust my friends to take care of my gear...i dont want em as friends.

I dont mind taking time to help people out to get to know weapons. I have take many friends/relatives to shoot with me and several of them have gone out to complete ther hunters education course then proceeded to buy their own guns to shoot. One of them being my girlfriends nephew who purchsed a .17hmr along with a .243. If he can do it at 11yrs old, im sure a grown man cam do it. my problem is when they expect me to hand my rifle over because "I Hunt" I dont mind if they ask ahead of time so we can go to the range and they put a few down range after they purchase a few boxes. but when they expect me to give them a 30 second review of how my rifle works, just doesnt fly with me. I cant just hand over MY rifle after i worked hard to set it the way i want. Being a college student doesnt give me the free time to go to the range every weekend to check my zero.

There are only two people in my life I'd loan a rifle to, my best friend of forty years and my dad. My best friend has never asked, but come to think of it I loaned my .243 Remington 660 to my dad in 1995. I wonder when hes going to bring it back?
