I'm trying to decided between target or hunting turrets. I like the idea of quick changes with target turrets, but seems like they would be pointless for hunting. And unless the turrets lock, the risk of bumping them seems high when hunting. Then I think about target shooting and seems like it would be a pain to remove caps and adjust. Gun will be used mostly for target shooting and maybe 1-2 deer/hog hunts per year. I have better guns for hunting. So I'm leaning towards target turrets but dont wanna look like a tactical dork.

Most of them don't turn easy enough to worry about bumping them while hunting so it's not a must that they lock down. You will get into the habit of making sure your elevation and windage are zeroed prior to adjusting for a given range. But if you're stuck on wanting them locked, Millet has a locking ring below the turret.
The "Tactical Dork" term that you use will fly out the window when you learn to use the turrets and make a clean shot beyond your zero range. I now have no use for a scope with hunter knobs, but then again I regularly shoot well beyond my hundred yard zero.

I've always used hunting turrets, but recently switched to a scope with target turrets. Dialing my dope and watching a first round hit on a 4x4 plate was a great feeling. Since you're planning your rifle to be for a target, I would suggest going with target turrets.

Yes id definitely like to learn how to use target turrets but im so used to traditional hunting scopes. You guys are really making lean towards turrets. Great information guys.

JBM will give you a pretty good estimate of how many clicks you'll need at X range. Makes the turrets even easier

You reset the values to zero when you sight it it. So even if it got bumped it would be easy to see its off. Just turn them back to zero.
Tactical turrets are the way to go in my opinion, if not you are using guess work (kentucky windage).
Was deer hunting in Nebraska with my partner three years ago. He lazed a deer at 500 yards. Put in his dope and deer folded like a cheap suit.

What percentage of the Tact Turrents scopes do you find that track right on the money?

Get the target turrets (with no BDC reticle) and learn how to use the turrets. You will find shooting a longer ranges is much more accurate. Look at some of the Vortex line of optics.

Wow, I figured most people would recommend against target turrets.
So let me ask another question guys. I'm seriously looking at the Zeiss 4.5-14. But I keep reading that the 1" tube will limit the amount of adjustments I can do. It would be going on top of a FN PBR with 20MOA base so I'm assuming that will help. Would I be better off goign with a 30mm tube? I'm thinking the furthest I'll be shooting is 500 yards. 90% of my shooting will be less than 300 yards.

I'm shooting a 223 to 600 and only have tall rings now. I can't remember my dope at 600 but at 500 I am 44 clicks or 11 MOA. So it should be ok as long as it has enough adjustment

If 500 is as far as you plan to go, a Zeiss is fine. I ran one for a year or two on a hunting gun.

Figure out your drop and then lookup the manufacturers range. Depending on what your price range is get a scope with zero stop and never worry about it again.

From some of my searching the zeiss will only have about 40 moa built in maybe a bit more. If you run a 20moa base, yes you will probably have enough adjustment for 500-600 but for 100 yard zero you will be on the extreme of your available adjustment.
Zeiss glass is truly better than just about the rest especially for the money but for tactical applications they leave a bunch to be desired.
If I were to go with the zeiss and I almost did, I would just go zero MOA base, and a mildot reticle you can use for hold over.
Otherwise you need to look into mil/mil scopes as they have much more application and typically come on scopes built with much more internal adjustment

I am putting a Leupold Mark AR 6-18x40 with target turrets on my Savage 116 in 270. This is my hunting rig. For $60 Im ordering a custom turrrets from Leupold which match my hunting load matched to my muzzle velocity, elevation and avg temp. Im used to holdover normally, but I believe that being able to make a couple of clicks on the top turret and keeping my regular aiming point will be great. I have range cards drawn up for my stands so I know the yardage of everywhere I can shoot. This will be my first experience with target turrets and Im excited to give them a try.

Well, I've got a good deal on a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50 with target turrets. I've looked through a few Zeiss's and even owned a 3x9 for awhile so I really like the glass on them. Scope cost more than I paid for the gun! Am I crazy? Never thought I'd pay more than $400 for a scope.
Due to the available shooting ranges I have around me, here's the approximate breakdown of what I'll be shooting:
100yds - 60% 200yds - 25% 300-500yds - 15%
So I'm thinking about zeroing at 100yds. But I'm wondering if I zero at 200yds, it'll be easier for me to adjust up and down.
Now I gotta find some good rings. The rings that came with the gun are way too high and seem a bit cheap in quality.

What percentage of the Tact Turrents scopes do you find that track right on the money? All of the big name scopes with turrets that I've been around have worked great. If you buy a Tasco or BSA, don't get turrets.

And I can't stress enough get turrets that match your reticle! What do you mean? A lot of scopes come with MOA knobs and a mil dot reticle. Once you learn how to use your scope and have 2 different adjustments, it makes things more confusing or difficult to work with. If the turrets are mils, then a mil dot will work. If the turrets are MOA, then get a reticle that is moa.

That way you only adjust up, never down. In the heat of competition or hunting you need to remove as many variables that will make you have to stop and think about what you are doing. Instead you want to be able to react quickly under stress. That's another reason having a reticle and turret that match is important. My DOPE chart taped to the rifle is in MILs. It will work if I need to hold over for a shot or if I have time to dial. Either way elevation is adjusted in MILs. As opposed to hold-over in MILs (for the reticle) and turret adjustment in MOA which is still very common but is slowly falling away, because it SUCKS! having two sets of numbers to worry about. One in decimal (MILs) and one in fractional (1/8, 1/4 or 1/2 MOA).

The scope I'm getting has standard Z Plex reticle so I guess it doesn't matter whether the turrets are MIL or MOA? This is all alot of great information. I'm excited to get started with turrets.

With a standard duplex style reticle, either will be fine. It's when people buy mil reticled optics and use MOA turrets. Baffles my mind!

I see. I've used MIL and MOA together. It's how I started, so it wasn't that big of a deal to learn I guess.
Standard duplex is the KISS solution IMHO.

If you use a range finder and not your reticle a standard duplex is fine. But you need to your drop and wind drift at range to effectively use your turrets. But would you honestly take an animal at 500+ yards while hunting? I personally can't age or judge antler size that far to risk a shot on a game animal. Now a yote or hog is different, I'll risk it for the fun. Practice practice practice

And about removing the caps. All my "turrets" do not have caps, they are exposed.
