I have thought about hunting Caribou since I was a kid growing up reading stories in Outdoor Life. Yeah I could get on a deer lease but between the lease fee and the corn feeding, gas, food, electric, scouting trips etc. for a little bit more I could realize a life long dream. This is the reason why I chose my 30.06 as my rifle.

Anyone on here ever hunt Alaska or up there in Canada? Tips for selecting outfitters? Or anyone that might want to come along? grin

I have made up my mind to do this and have a lot to learn between now and then. This is the beginning of the process. So any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

JT

Research transporters out of Kotzebue, AK. They book up quick so start now. You wont need a guide. Late Aug-first part of Sept. should be a good time. Be sure to take a good tent and rain gear.

JT & Hardwired,

I went on a caribou hunt three years ago with a fantastic outfit, Ungava Outfitters in Quebec. I liked the hunt so much I booked a bear hunt the following spring with them. Fishing was combined with both hunts.

Both hunts were successful and alot of fun! Everyone tagged out on two caribou and we also caught 20+lb lake trout and char on the hunt. Also got some ptarmagin and saw a couple wolves (couldn't shoot them)

The bear hunt was great! Everyone saw bears almost every night of the hunt with multiple bear sightings being common. It wasn't "if" you got a bear, it was which bear do you want. I actually shot a smaller bear but it had a fantastic white blaze on it's chest...got a full mount of it.

If you'ld like some pictures and contact information just let me know. Sammy is a great guy as well as Bucky Adams.

If it were me, since your in dfw id go to the DSC show next month and talk to outfitters. Youll have the chance to talk to dozens of them and be able to get a good feel for their operations.

Caribou has gone down hill across Canada and Alaska. Many of the areas have been shut down or restricted to residents only. As far as a guide goes it depends on your hunting ability. It may not be a bad idea.

I would recomend consulting a high quality booking agent such as Atcheson & Son.

the huntreport has a good article about the current conditions of the carribou population. Pick your outfitter wisely
