A little background: When my wife and I met, she was just coming off of a bad marriage to a real jerk. He had various issues and among them was his penchant for pointing guns at her when he bacame upset.....needless to say, she developed a rather strong disdain for firearms!! In fact, she was terrified of them. Well, through the years she's come around, and now understands that it's not the gun but the idiot standing behind it that she hated. In the last couple of years, she's allowed me to teach her a little bit about them and even become interested in shooting. Now, every six months or so she and her girlfriends take a "girls trip". Last spring it was to the ranch, and last fall they went to Florida where my wife arranged for a fishing charter (heck, I wanted to go!!!). Apparently, I've had a bit of an effect on her!! Well, anyway, after our Kids Annual Trip to the ranch, which I posted earlier about, she informed me that her niece had "inspired" her and she thought that she might like to kill a deer. Seizing the opportunity I arranged for a babysitter and away we went last Friday down the the ranch. During the drive she of course informed me that she wasn't interested in shooting culls or does (oh, of course not) but instead wanted to go straight for a trophy! In fact, she wanted the buck that I had been chasing all season! I wasn't the least bit surprised..... Fortunately, I'd spent way too many hours in the blind chasing this guy and knew her chances were slim to none. Anyway, we get to the ranch and race to get into the blind before the feeder goes off. Sure enough, the big guy isn't gonna play ball with us but right before dark out steps a HUGE bodied 7 ptr that I'd seen many times before. Now, I was pretty sure she wasn't going to go for it and solve my problem by taking this buck instead of "my" buck but to my surprise her eyes lit up and she just started nodding her head. Well, just as calm as can be she makes a perfect shot and he's dead within 75 yds!!! She was like a little kid she was so excited.....loved the whole experience!! We got back to the shop and I gutted it while she hung out with me and, needless to say, we ended up staying pretty late "celebrating". Well, at 5:30 am she was up and ready to go again and after shaking out the cobwebs we were on our way to the blind, albeit a little bit late. As we were parking the Polaris I heard the feeder go off and as we approached the blind I heard a bunch of snorts and blowing and then a stampede...not good. Well, things settled down and within a half hour we had some customers, just not the guy we were after. An hour or so later, I looked up from my book and checked out each buck that was still hanging around just to confirm that nothing new had wandered in and as I got the last one I about fell out of my chair!!! I didn't see him come in but there he was! I looked at my wife and grinned and when she finally put the binoculars down she calmly told me that I should shoot him. Nope, I told her, he came out for you so shoot him!!! Quick!!! Well, she gets on the rifle and just as she gets settled a doe blows and everything takes off...except the buck which stands there for another split second and then takes off too but just then she squeezes the trigger!!! OH NO!!! To say I was worried is a gross understatement! So we sit for 15 minutes or so and discuss the shot: he was running when she pulled the trigger and he barely kicked, which had me convinced she either gut shot him or just creased his belly. Well, I can't take it any longer so I head over to look for blood and after wandering around for a few minutes I find a good trail...WHEW!!! 100 yards later.... Not bad for her second buck, eh? Our tenth anniversary is coming up next year and on the way down to the ranch she was telling me she wanted to go somewhere sandy and tropical. On the way home she asked about going bear hunting in Vancouver!! I think I've created a monster!!
