With in the last year we have had reports from our deer hunters of Quail coming in to the feeders. Then last January I jumped a covey on one side of the ranch (2200 acres) and then the next day saw another on the other side. Two weekends ago i was at the cabin (in the middle of the ranch) and watched a covey of 7. Now the BIG question is do I take a dog or two and see just how many we have. I would not shoot any but worried about breaking them up. By the way they are Bob White not Blue

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

I have been hunting pen raised birds around Stephenville and would love to be able to hunt wild birds. With the drought and all the talk about decline in birds I'm scared to ruin a good thing.
I have one other Question: They say pen raised will not survive but if I released some down there will they covey up with the wild birds?

More than likely they will not covey up, they will die within a few days. There is a very real possibility that the pen raised birds could spread disease to the wild birds.
Where did you see these birds?

Pen raised birds will covey up. I see it all the time when birds get out of our flight pens. I have see old birds covey up with young birds. Pen raised birds can survive in the wild with food water and cover. We have a covey that fluctuates between 10 - 15 birds that hang around the flight pens. Depending on how many have gotten out recently. Most likely why pen raised birds wont survive at a particular location is the same reason why there is not any wild birds there either. We have excellent habitat around our flight pens. Lots of tall native grasses. Handful of cedars for loafing areas. And plenty of food and water from the spill over from the flight pens. The reason our liberated covey fluctuates is because of predators. In my opinion the flying variety get most of them. And I have seen a couple of plump kitty cats over the years. Loss Of habitat and predators is the main reason wild birds have disappeared and why it's hard for pen raised birds aren't very sucessfull. The main reason pen raised birds can't be expected to repopulate an area is because it's very difficult to get pen raised birds to breed set and brood in the wild. I have never seen pen raised birds join up with wild birds but I hear it pretty common and is a good way to help repopulate an area with some quail. WARNING . If your planning on trying this make sure the birds you buy are healthy. We raise our birds on wire to insure no diease is spread when our birds are released. Check out the breeders facilities are clean and that they truly care about the health of their birds. Anyways. My two cents.

We are 20 miles south west of LLano. We have lots of cover and up in till this year we had plenty of grass. My luck I would release some pen birds that would kill the wild birds. I am going see what the winter does and my try to figure out how many birds we have while shed hunting. I even thought about trying to find some way to feed them.

What we have started doing is hunting our dogs and when one goes on point we mark that area. We come back a build some habitat with mesquite branches. We then put a water and feeder that our pen raised birds are used to using in that brush. We then take 5-10 birds that are banded, so we can keep some records on them, and release them we have been doing this for two years and have shot a few of the banded birds this year. We were seeing a lot of birds last year with good size coveys but this year with the drought it hasn’t been as good and no young birds what so ever.
