Looks like rabbies to me....could have got caught in a snare and chewed his leg off to get free...whatever the case be careful when your messin around out there....they will attack and you dnt want to get a rabbie shot...the needle is huge and hurts like a B!

That there is the tell-tale sign of a broken pelvis. He was indeed hit by a car or truck. I've seen that before and even a dang old mangey coyote should't have to go humpin around like that. Looks like it's time for the .223 dirt nap lullaby.
