He's been at it now for 3 seasons and finally learned how to be quiet long enough for them to start coming out. Last year we saw a few but no shooters. This year we already started seeing some good looking ones but again no legal deer. Checked the cameras on a Friday afternoon and this spike was showing up all over the place. My son tried to call dibs on him since he was on "our" camera first. Had to explain to him that there is no "dibs" in hunting. Turns out this one showed up Friday night to the feeder. We waited and tried to get a shot but he wasn't really wanting to him my son a good shot. Had to watch him walk away but at least he didn't take a crap shot at him. Good thing was my son was happy just seeing a deer and didn't seem too disappointed that he didn't get his 1st deer that night. Come Saturday morning I was sitting back letting my eyes get some much needed rest when my son hit me telling me there was a deer at the feeder. Well, sure enough the spike had shown back up. We watched him for a few minutes and then a bird spooked him. My son thought his hunt was over but I told him to watch that I'd bet Mr. Spike would be back out. Sure enough after just about 5 minutes he showed back up. This time he was facing us head on. I was so proud my son told me that he didn't want to shoot him in the front and patiently waited till he had a good shot to the side. Deer only ran about 50 yards and dropped in some brush nearby. We showed him how to start at where you "think" he was when you shot him and start following the blood trail. We tracked him back till it got pretty thick and then looked up and there was the deer. The smile on his face tells it all but I think I was smiling more than him. Cool thing also was he did help "somewhat" with the cleaning and processing of the deer and wasn't afraid to hold the heart. We did discuss that Mom didn't have to know all of the details.

Had to talk him into a Euro mount from McTaxidermy instead of a shoulder mount. I told him that he had to have at least 8 points before I would fork over that amount of cash. I think he'll be just fine with a Euro on this one.

Thanks guys. We had an awesome time and I certainly look forward to many more adventures like this one before I'm not as much fun to hang out with.

Congrats, my son got his first last year and my daughter got hers last week. Its an awesome feeling getting your kid there first deer. Don't forget to submit him for the Texas Big Game Award First Harvest award. It's free and they send him a little certificate they can frame and if close to you an awards banquet to attend. We had fun.

Congrats to your son! That looks like some good eatin' & a nice Euro mount
When he was young, I told Dale Jr. that hunting and racing are a lot alike. Holding that steering wheel and holding that rifle both mean you better be responsible. Dale Earnhardt
