Had a bowhunting buddy who had nothing but a little 22 rifle that he used. Guess he woulda used something better if he had it... I went with him once.. We was riding 4 wheelers lookin for some hawgs and he dove off with that rifle and went to work poppin em in the head and killed a couple.. It was wild.. Pigs everywhere
I have killed a few in a trap with a 22..
I went hunting with some guys who used dogs and the only gun they carried was a mark2 ruger 22 pistol..
When in doubt.. Empty the magazine

I have seen a few of them dropped dead with a .22 mag, in bow range and they where all less than 100lbs. I take a .22mag where I go mainly because its close to or maybe in the city limits and I don't want people to hear a big rifle. But I always carry a bigger sidearm and I believe there are some monster pigs in the area so I may start taking something a little bigger than the .22 mag

I use a .22 for finishing shots while hunting- back of the head and they immediately leg lock and start twitching. I have shot two under the feeder with a .22, both under 20 yds, both to the back of the head (not the ear, the bone on the forehead is the thickest part and it's too easy to miss a little wide- the back of the head gives you a shot at the brain stem). Absolutely DRT given the right shot placement.

"it takes a sick sob to allow any of Gods animals to suffer."
So I'm to assume you are zero percent bodyfat, regularly feed the homeless, and donate most of you paycheck to the food bank and childrens hospitals?
Cause if you ain't...You are just as sick!
Me, I tear up St Judes envelopes, roll my windows up for the homeless, and like to hear hogs scream.
I actually find the hogs to suffer just about as much with a 22 as a bow. Iv'e yet to have on run more than 30 yds when I stick'em ! Last one didnt take a step ! Broadheads are NASTY !!!

My son built a hog trap last Christmas. Checked it one morning and we had at least a dozen of various sizes trapped. He pulled out his 22 and started shooting into the pile. Some he was able to get good placement and died in the pen but it was a madhouse. Pigs running everywhere, piling up on each other, etc. They piled up so high on one side that some were able to go over the top. With so much weight pushing and shoving against a single panel, they took out one side and several got away...some carrying 22 wounds with them. I asked my son why he was shooting with a 22 when I had a larger gun in the truck? He was afraid that the bigger gun would scare my Grandson!! I wasn't happy to see wounded animals take off for the creek. We had a little discussion about hunting ethics.

Needless suffering is nots god's will. Explain that to the animals that starve/freeze to death in the Northern extremes...

Shot a small one, less than 100 lbs yesterday with a .22 mag. Shot it behind the front shoulder at about 20 yards and dropped it. Didn't kill it right away, but it was laying there close to gone, shot it in the head one more time after that, but I was a little suprised the 22 mag was able to do the trick as easy as it did.

Any minute I expect the magnum cartridge guys to come in here and tell you that you need a 577 nitro to kill hogs. I always get a good laugh at those guys. I hunt with an AR in 223 and have been for quite some time now. I also dont use anything bigger than a 65gr round. Yes its not a .22lr but its still a small caliber. Ive dropped hundreds of hogs with a 223. I always put them behind the ear and 90% of them dont even take a step. Ive also earholed a few with a 17 hmr that were drt. Just put the bullet where its suppose to go and youll have a dead hog.

Otto its not our fault that youre not confident enough in your shooting ability to use small calibers. As I said, Ive put alot of hogs and deer with a .223 that didnt take a step. With the technology in bullets today, small calibers are just as effective as some larger calibers on most game, especially here in Texas.

If all I had was a 22 and could put a round in ear hole I would take the shot. If I couldn't earhole him or put one thru his eye I would let him walk. I hate to see a animal suffer just because.

I'm very confident in my shooting ability and I've been hunting for 40 years. Not that it matters but I've hunted all over the place including Africa, Canada, Europe and Asia. You have no clue what you are talking about. Are you trying to compare 223 with 22LR? I though this thread was about 22LR. I do have an 223 AR rifle which I routinely use on hogs with well placed shots but I'll never us a 22LR anything bigger than a house cat, what's the point anyway?

You didnt specify. You said 22 which a 223 is a 22 caliber round. Ive used a variety of 22 caliber rounds and in Texas thats mainly all I use. Have I used a 22lr to kill hogs ? Absolutely. Do I do it routinely ? No. I prefer using my ebr that most traditional hunters hate so much.

The thread says ".22 lr" i think that is pretty specific. also a 223 bullet is actually .224 that being said i have shot the largest boar ive ever killed with a gun with a 22lr. Would i do it again? HELL NO! my buddies 30 30 jammed and things got dicey real quick took 11 rounds before i dropped him about 5 yards infront of us. also that being said i am extremely confident in my shooting abilities. I shoot out to 1000 yards with custom rifles as a hobby and practice all the time. Does that mean i would feel confident putting the shot wherever i wanted it? yeah it does. but just because you can does not mean you should. As long as i own a centerfire rifle you will never find me doing anything but shooting hogs in a trap with a 22lr these cci 40gr velocitor's that keep being mentioned only have 107 pound of energy at 100 yards. to put into perspective a 223 with a 64 grain soft point has 1098 Ft-lbs energy at 100 yards

I have killed more with a .22mag than .22lr but have shot several with a .22lr at various ranges probably all under 75yards when I happened upon them and that was what I had with me at the time. I don't recall ever loosing one with either. Shot selection is key.
I have shot dozens in traps/trailers too with a .22lr and never have needed a follow up shot on any of those.
