Howdy fellow bird doggers and quail hunters... wanted to check in and see if anyone has been out to black gap this yr, and can report on some blue numbers? Went out there ast year and had a great time, beautiful place, saw 4 or 5 huge coveys, but they were to wild too let me dogs get close enough to work...
Also Gulf Coast Vizla Club is hosting an AKC Hunt Test ( all pointing breeds welcome) at Holtz Ranch in Caldwell Texas. Its Dec. 10th and 11th, and theres still spots open in Jr, Sr, and Master.... Great way to tune your dog up on some birds, that are from Benny's in columbus , so as far as pen raised goes they are as wild as they get...
If you've never done a hunt test, come out all pointing breeds welcome...
If your dogs green not whoa broke, run him in Jr, he wont need to hold a point in Jr, just find the bird, demonstrate a point, and then he can do whatever he likes after that...
lots of good dog folk, and lots of outstanding dogs

Is the a horseback or walking trial?
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Black Gap is in pretty rough shape due to the drought. I was there Thanksgiving, did not hunt but drove around a little. A lot less cover than last year and i checked a few of the guzzlers, they were bone dry and probably have been for quite some time.

@kindall, its actually a hunt test, not a field trial, your dogs are judged against a standard not other dogs, its run very similar with the exception you are not necessarily running against your brace mates... heres some information http://www.akc.org/events/hunting_tests/pointing_breeds/basically your dogs are judged on bird finding, Retrieve, (in sr and master) backing, (sr and master) pointing, hunting ( may have left a category or two out )... to pass the test all the catogories must meet a score of 4 and all the scores have to avg 7 i think... not totally sure... I ll be running 2 dogs both in senior next weekend, a 3 yr old and 1 yr old... Ive worked them hard all summer on pigeons, which do wonders for stop to flush, and creeping... I was able to get my 1 yr old to steady to shot, in little time using pigeons... really sped things up also we have a training lease in katy, where we have two pigeon loifts for training, anyone on here, that wants to join its 350 for the year, and we all pitch in for feed...love to have any other dog folks on. hope to see some of yall out there at the test!

Anyone on here? even if we don't own a Viszla?

MS1454 its open to all pointing breeds. I'm trying to convince my husband he can do without my V as a duck dog for one weekend, so I can run him at the hunt test.

I'd recommend anyone that wants to put some titles on your dogs to do it. If your dog can find a bird, hold a point for a few seconds and somewhat follow your commands, you can get your Junior Hunter easily. The senior and Master levels are bit more involved, but the JH tests can give you some good experience. Lots of helpful people. I've enjoyed all the hunt tests and field trials I've done and look forward to more. My only gripe with them is the timing - it's hunting season!

the lease is open to all breeds as well, not just vizlas, and yes b20 that is a crappy thing about tests and tests and trials.. i try to hity 3 a yr, hopefully title my dogs in those 3... usually i hit one in december, and two in jan. and try to get some wild bird hunts in after that... hope to see you out there one of these days at a test or trial...

Just got back from the hunt test and the two boys did awesome! Jett 3 yr old vizla got one Senior ribbon, with all 10's and 9's on the score, he was the top guy on Saturday His full brother Ace 15 mos old, the real star, he got 2 Senior ribbons with the highest scores on sunday... 15 mos old backing, retrieving, steady to shot (release), and hunting like a mad man! These are my pride and joy and ive trained them both from day 1... lots of sweat and lots of pigeon work LOL!!

Congrats, some great looking and working dogs. My guess is the birds have no chance of hiding around you and those guys.
