This past week I had two bucks come past me chasing a doe. Both the doe and both bucks came running from behind me and left no time for a shot. However, I also made no attempt to get either of the bucks (the second buck came past me a few minutes after the doe and first buck) to stop long enough for a shot.

I've had success getting a buck to stop in his tracks while walking by just grunting at him, but never tried it on one that was moving at such a fast pace.

Anyone ever had success getting a buck to stop long enough for a shot while he was chasing a doe?

I have often yelled "HEY" in my best deer voice. It works well on coyotes too.

This last weekend, when I shot my buck, he was in a full sprint across the field, I used used the call, and blew out a doe bleat. Stopped him in his tracks, and even got hgim to change directions and start heading my way.

This depends on so many things. How committed they are to the doe is the most important. If they are just getting onto the doe, then they can be stopped fairly easily. Whisteling, saying HEY as mentioned above, even barking will work. If you have a set of horns, rattle them quickly if you can. Distance is also important. If the buck is far enough away from you, it wont matter what you do. If he is in close, you have be to careful what you do in order not to scare all other deer.

All in all, whistleing has probably worked the best for me over the years. Most times getting the doe to stop is more important.

For bucks that won't stop for anything, if you shoot the doe, the buck will sometimes stop or even come back to it.

I've whisled and stopped the doe. The buck stops too.

If I was positive I was going to take him and had the cross-hairs up, I yell "hey boy!". The last two bucks I killed I did this and they turned broadside to me.

I think any short, sudden noise will stop them for a quick look at you. Be ready to shoot.

My dad always whistled. My whistles sound more like a bad spit. The last time I needed one to pause, I made a noise that sounded like "quack". I don't know why I came up with it, but it worked.

Now I wonder, if I took up duck hunting, would a deer grunt work?

Still, while staying still and quiet is rule #1 while sitting on the stand, remembering to make noise just doesn't always come natural.

I had to yell "Hey" two times, louder on the 2nd time to stop a buck I have been after for a few years from running right by me. It worked, to my amazement and I got him.....what a feeling.

May be hard to stop a running. rutting buck but a short baah, like a sheep would make, will usually stop a walking deer. Usually use it when making head, neck shots on does or cull spikes. Be ready to pull the trigger as soon as they freeze. The baah won't scare them off as may a whistle that goes bad.

I've honked multiple times and had them finally see me about 10' from the truck... some deer just aren't going to stop bc they are so focus on chasing tail that they don't care what's going on...and the does just want to get to cover to try to lose them. If it's 10 bucks on the doe, hopefully the trailing one will be post prime and have to lay down and rest in the shooting lane. I don't like making noise from the stand bc if they do gear it they might not stop and they will forever remember something funny about that spot...and if it's a buck that is nocturnal 99% of the time his 1% of daylight action will shift away from that "whistle/he-ay", he'll be out of his element and someone else will bust a cap in him.

My buddy and I cull shoot a So Texas ranch, we've had the radio on, the door to the blind open, shot doe with bucks in the feeder
pen. They usually jump out, but come right back...The does however, are the trophy, and are much more wary...It's a matter
of pressure...we usually just shout at the buck if we want them
to stop...the old Moss Back don't get old stopping...DD

Only if the Doe stops. This year my Nephew and I were easing through a creek bottom and came across a nice Buck trotting along behind a Doe. They were chasing around in about 5 acres of the bottom; sometimes trotting past us at less than 40 yards. Every time they got close, my Nephew would start hollering "HEY!" over and over. Neither deer ever looked at us or stopped. After we laughed about it, we realized that we had probably just scared every other deer out of the bottom trying to stop a Buck we weren't even going to shoot.
