Never killed an aoudad, but I hear they are tough animals and would not feel comfortable taking one with a .243 I talked to a west texas game warden who shot a nice aoudad recently and the processor found his .300 mag bullet and a .243 bullet. when telling the story, come to find out that a friend of his had hit the same aoudad with the .243 and it didn't take it down. on a similar note, I hit a 300 pound animal with a 6.8spc 115gr. SSA and it dropped faster than I could put it back in my optic for the potential second shot. the shot was taken a just over 300 yards. I hit it just above the shoulder and it did amazing internal damage.

There is a huge Auodad in the photo section shot by a cute little girl with a 55gr .223, I think a well placed .243 would be more than enough for any game animal in Texas.
I feel more like I do now then I did when I got here.

i would't feel 100% confident shooting anything bigger than a blackbuck or a sika deer with a .243, unless its a head/neck shot.
with a .243, it either works or it doesen't. people who use them swear by them, until that one day when the make a good shot "but for some reason i just couldn't find it."
alot of folks use the "well i shot a deer last week and it dropped dead as rocks, so a .243/whatever i shot it with is plenty"
on average, with a small caliber rifle, you will lose more game that you would if you shot a larger caliber rifle, regardless of shot placement. you cannot use a one scenario that turned out favorably and base the merit of a cartridge on that single scenario

I would feel comfortable hunting any Texas game with a .243. I started hunting with one when I was ten, and continued to use one until I got my first 25-06 when I was in my twenties. I cant seem to use anything else these days. Out of all the deer I killed with that 243, I only remember trailing two deer over thirty yards. Shot placement is key with any cartridge, but more so on the less powerful ones such as the 243 or 223. My most difficult tracking came when I made a good clean shot with a 7MM Rem Magnum right thru the lungs of a 10 point. The shot was about 125 yards, and there was little blood. The bullet cut a perfect .284" tunnel thru the deer, never expanded and exited. That was a two and a half hour track that ended up being nearly a mile. That goes to show that anything is possible even with those powerful cartridges.

Guys, the ONLY ethical cartridge is a .338 LAPUA MAGNUM.
Anything less is just asking for trouble. You're all giving us ethical hunters bad names.
BRB taking my .416 out Squirrel hunting.

I've shot everything from deer, black bear, and elk over a 5 year period with a 243. I thought it was great until I shot a mulie buck square in the shoulder on video and trailed it for 1/2 mile and spotted it running over the next ridge with another buck a mile away never did find it. I shoot a 300wsm now and have never lost anything or thought do I have enough gun to shoot something.

I had an old guide in Colorado tell me that he felt the best mountain rifle was a light 20" bbl 243. He then proceeded to tell me that about 15 yrs ago he saw the biggest elk of his life at 600yds and couldn't get any closer to him and had to watch him walk over the ridge. It occurred to me at that point that folks claiming to be guides do not always know what they're talking about and that just b/c someone uses something and has for 40 yrs does not make it the best thing since sliced bread.

I have no problem shooting alot of things with a 243, the thing I have the problem with is the 400 yard part. No way im chunking a 243 bullet at anything more than a coyote bobcat or something of the like at 400 yards. Bring that in to 100 or 150 yards and I would probably be ok for elk with the right bullet, but I would pick my shots very carefuly and it wouldnt be ideal. Personaly I would take something bigger.
I believe that a 223 can be a very effective and ethical gun to deer hunt with as long as you know the capabilities of the gun and limit yourself accordingly.

Ive killed 300 pound hogs with a .223 . I own guns ranging from .17 to a .50, and I bow hunt. I don't think that trailing a deer 100 yards is uncommon with most calibers/broad heads. Ive hit heart with .308 mag and still had to trail deer. And I hate blowing the shoulder off a perfectly good eating animal. Id be comfortable shooting any game with a .243
