I have an old savage model 340, anyone one else own one? I am needing to replace the stock, find a replacement clip and was wanting to tap for a scope. This particular gun isnt tapped for a scope, it has the old dockendorff sights. Everything ive seen online is telling me it should be tapped and drilled for a scope, so not sure why this one isnt. Looking for somebody who knows these old guns that could help, Thanks.

Like to have one someday myself. So I've noticed one on TGT lately and a similar one here I think. These owners may be a good source for this question?

If you're willing to do a little finishing work, you can get what you want RIGHT HERE. I bought a stock from these folks for a Remington 788. I have not done the finishing on it yet, but the fit is very good and I wouldn't hesitaet to buy more from them.

Are you sure you have a Savage Model 340? The Model 340's should be drilled and tapped with 4 holes on the side of the receiver for a scope mount, but there are always exceptions I suppose.
The reason I ask is there was an earlier Model 325 Savage that came with the dockendorff sight and was not drilled/tapped for a scope. The Model 325 is distinguished by a flat European style butterknife bolt handle instead of the round knob found on the Mod 340 bolt handle. Otherwise they both look much the same.

I have a synthetic one now, it works but is ugly. PM Jim Davis he just bought a used 340 30/30.

Ill post pics of the gun, compared to others 340's ive seen mine looks like someone put an aftermarket, horrible fitting stock on it, it has a few stamps on it that might be important in figuring out what exactly Ive got here. Ive seen online some Stevens 325's that are almost identical to this gun.

THIS ONE is made for both the 325 and 340. I have no idea what the difference is between the two, but it sounds like this might be the one you need. I am sure you'll figure it out. I wonder if there was a number of transitional 340s that used up a then-existing stock of parts for the 325? Whatever the case, the stock you need is available. EDIT: Duh. I just read the description more carefully and it makes it sound like there was the Savage 340 and a very similar Stevens 325. Maybe the 325 was just finished up a little differently (as in without being drilled-n-tapped). I can find no reference to a Savage 325 in my old Gun Trader's Guide, but there is the Stevens 325. Evidently they made a Stevens 322 that was identical to the Savage 340 for a couple of years back in the late 40s. It's a bit confusing.

The Savage 340 and the Stevens 325 are the same rifle. The Stevens was made for chain stores. The Stevens (made by Savage)was popular and therefore the company incorporated it into the Savage line as the 340. The early Savage rifles had a hardwood stock (not walnut) and were not drilled for a scope mount. Later in the production of this rifle they were drilled on the left side of the receiver for a scope mount and the stocks were changed to walnut. You can buy stocks for these rifles from serveral sources on-line and you can buy scope mounts made by Sun Optics USA on Amazon.com. These rifles were made from about 1947 until 1985 and are very good deer rifles. Later models were also made in different calibers. I own one made in 1954 and I love it. Not fancy but especially good for small stature hunters and young hunters.

If its tapped, you might be able to find the B-Square mount which really puts new life into the rifle. The hole pattern might be off depending on the age. I did one and it looked so good someone named RanchDawg bought it from me right away.

I have another variant on this rifle, the Springfield model 840, other than the name it is just like the Savage.
I feel more like I do now then I did when I got here.

I have three of these Savage/Stevens bolt action rifles. One Savage340A, a Stevens, another "Foremost" which was a hardware chain store label. The tap holes are on the left side, along the length of the bolt receiver. They require a special mount, believe mine is Williams. I might add Williams makes an excellent peep/receiver mount for these guns. I only have one scoped and it is easy to stay in 1.5" at 100 yds. Several years ago Boyds' still offered a stock for these guns. Incidentally, the guns are the forerunner to the Savage 110. Magazines may be a problem.
