Growin up turkey huntin from age 7(36 now), just curious what method y'all use. My dad has priddy much always just picked a spot and sat there, never moving, even with a gobbler that was hung up. He has killed alot of birds that way. I generally try to set up in a good place in the morn, but will move around quite a bit if I'm not getting any response. Any thoughts?
gonna hide out in the bottoms, where i hunted deer and turkey, i know that swamp like the back of my hand-Chris Knight

I love Turkey hunting because every hunt is different. I set up or move based on when and where I am hunting(I hunt multiple states). There are a lot of different ways to kill Gobblers. Your Father's way is one of the most successful strategies. I personally like to go after them like you do. Its fun to locate and set up and if he doesn't cooperate go after another one. Run and Gun. Of course If I don't kill one I always second guess myself with I should of stayed put. LOL.

Used to sit in place mostly, but now I chase them and I love that feeling after closing the gap and getting a big one. Like FLDOUG, I often do second guess myself though.

I like run and gun but often use the sit and wait them out method. This past spring was working one that hung up I though and heard another and went after him. hadn't gone 300 yards when the one I left was gobblin where I had left. Only to findout the one I was going after was henned up. Oh well never know for sure which will be best to use. went back and setup on the first bird about half way back to him and got him anyway so all worked out that day

I like to use a mouth call. Preferably a yelper. Don't matter fall or spring it seems to work well. Plus a little run n gun mixed in. I hunted a place for 6 yrs one time with the last time being about 15 yrs ago and had one old Tom I could never get close too. I he heard me call he went the opposite way and if I tried to circle around and ambush him he would disappear. Every year I saw hum and every year he vanished. He was old and wise to all tricks that I could think of using. A big dark Tom with almost white on the tips of his feathers. I could have killed him with a rifle more than once but I always cared a 12 gauge with # 4 back then. After the first 3 or 4 yrs I just want to see if I could get him fooled more than kill him. I took plenty of other birds on the place, his sons I guess. But I hope the old guy lived a long happy life and died of old age personally.

Navasota, do you use a crow call to find the roost or just regular call Usually just sit the afternoon before and watch were they go in...but as far as finding them...crow call, duck call, honk the horn, slam the car door all seem to work haha

As Doug said, every hunt is different. In the spring, I listen for gobbles and haul butt to get as close as I dare then set up and call. Have killed turkeys within 1 minute of my first call and have had some that just refuse to come. If they are quite for some reason I will set up ambush points based on previous experience or tracks or something (who knows, sometimes just a gut feeling). In the fall, I set up ambushes based on patterns or scatter them and call. Used to prefer mouth call because it limits movement. Some folks have a hard time ever getting good with one. I have been practicing for years to call with just my mouth and have even taped myself and listen to the tape. It sounded good so I decided to try it a couple of years back. I was scared I was screwing up but the last three turkeys I have called have been with just my mouth and no artificial call. Its nice to be looking down the barrel and be able to make one little cluck and not move a muscle to do it. Often its just what the doctor ordered to finish the deal.

I have only hunted Dove and Turkey. I am the guest. We(they) hunt from a deerstand 100 to 150 yards out, with a 22Hornet.
The turkey seem to "Rome" all day. shoot them in the craw.
We do call them in. Last year I had a group of hens that I called in and they could not figure out where I was. They hung around the stand for about 30 min before they lost intrest

I do shoot a turkey or two during deer rifle season as bonus animals while deer hunting and have been known to run ahead of moving birds in the fall to wait for an ambush, but spring turkey is where it is at.
These days I hunt with my dog laying behind me on all private land spring turkey hunts. Either roost birds and set up to call the next morning or walk and call to locate birds moving during the day to stop and set up on. If a bird hangs up I usually move to or around the bird. The dog is used to catch and hold the bird immediately following the shot.

Neck shot with my 308. Damn things are corn vultures where im at. I can count 40-50 hens at once on my lease. They chase off deer and eat all the corn in only a couple minutes. To bad i can only kill 4 and ive already got 2 with one shot.
