we have a neighbor that has 60lb dog that was bitten on the nose. they took him to the vet and was presented a bill in the neighborhood of $1,300-$2,400.
they declined the treatment but received antibiotics and it appears that the dog is going to be alright.
just wondering if others on here experienced anything like this.

Usually a dog will survive a snake bite if they are bit above the front shoulders. My son in law has a dog that was snake bitten by rattlers 3 times now.

I lost a Healer pup last year to a Copperhead bite on the shoulder.

I've had them bit on the head, and a hound that was bitten just below the neck. That particular one, on the point of the chest, probably was lucky, because many times it is fatal in the chest area. One that was bitten on the head died the next year of heart failure, but she was a runt and it most likely was a congenital defect that showed up the second year.

I had my old coon hound bitten on the face and paw. I don't know what type of snake, but they said the venom was breaking down the blood cells. This was 12 years ago or so. The dog was 100% paralized (probably from pain). I took her to the ER in Arligton and they kept her in the ICU over night with an IV. It cost about $500.

Had a hound bit on the paw probably by a copperhead. The paw swelled up to the point it looked like it would pop. Heart beat slowed way down that night. Was fine in a few days but died a year later from liver failure.

Had several while growing up that were bitten, never had one to die from it. A couple of years ago my sons pit catchdog was bit numerous times, she died, don't know if it was from the venom or from eating the snake. The snake was never found but from the number of bites and there location we figured there was no way the snake could have survived, they had to have been biten' on each other for a while.

We had a beagle got bit on the face by a cotton mouth years ago. she got really swollen, and was pretty sick for a few days. I think she was about 2 or 3at the time, and she ended up finally dieing at age 14, so as long as it wasn't several bites or in a bad place(throat/neck) should be OK in time.

I have had several dogs bitten but have never lost one. I even had one of J.B. Hunts English Setters that was the full brother to Texas Trailrider the 2003 National champ get bitten. It was Sunday and the vet was at church. He got hit by a timber rattler. The dog was going down fast so I went to my truck and got some Benadryl tablets. I gave that dog 1mg for 1 lb. of dog weight. I keep a large syringe on hand and filled it with orange Gatorade and only orange Gatorade. Hold the dogs head so that he is looking at you and shoot it down the back of his throat. I now carry a bag of Bounce Back with me, you can get it at Tractor Supply. The vet called me back a couple of hours later and asked how he was. I told him what I did and he said I must have done this before. I told him yeah a couple. Told me to bring him in the next day for antibiotics. Vet I used to guide for gave me the recipe. Survival depends on a lot of things going your way but it sure is closer to your truck than the vet and it is always good to have first aid. May make the difference.

Copperheads and cotton mouths rarely kill dogs as they are simply not as poisonous as rattlers. As most of you know, I lost a top hound about a mouth ago to a bite that he received from a rattler. He was bitten on the hindleg just above the stifle area in the big muscle (not a good spot). He lived for there days at the clinic before passing. I have had many dogs bitten by rattlers over the years and the rule of thumb is if the dog is bitten from the shoulder forward, he can/will make it. If bitten behind the shoulder, you have to pray that it was a dry bite. I vaccinate my dogs with the rattlesnake vaccine as a rule. Unfortunately the dog I lost had not been vaccinated. I don't think that it can save a dog that it hit by a "hot" snake in a bad location but I do think that it does reduce the effects of a bite. Adios, Gary

I get the dogs the rattlesnake vaccine and they do the avoidance clinic. I don't worry to much about the copperheads and cotton mouths but rattlers are another story. Ive already put quite a bit of time and money into the dogs. So spending $1,300-$2,400 trying to save one would be a better option than having to start over with a new pup.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Had a Catahoula get bit by a big rattler once. Vet bill came out over $1000 and our vet's usually pretty reasonable.
I've been told by an old timer that has had many dogs bitten that a good shot of penicilin has worked for his dogs many times.

Penicillin....no vet...older rattlers arnt usually the problem..a healthy dog will usually be able to fight the venom...now if a juvinile rattler gets aholt of him....usually not much you can do.

Your vet was reasonable here as well. Had he/she used rattlesnake antivenin, the bill would have been at least 3x higher. Antibiotics (penicillin and others) along with steroids and fluids is a conservative protocol that will save most dogs. A couple previous posters mentioned the rattlesnake toxoid vaccine. This vaccine is the single BEST preventative measure that any dog owner can take to ensure a favorable outcome in the event of rattler envenomation. Should your vaccinated dog be bitten by a western diamondback, its odds of survival are measurably better than that of the unvaccinated dog. So, vaccinate if you hunt in rattlesnake country.
I was hoarding when hoarding wasn't cool.

Blaze was bitten when she was 1 1/2 by what was believed to be a cottonmouth. Minimal problems and some swelling. Treated with a steroid injection at the site of the bite.
I had a walker hound bitten that was much worse. Probably a timber rattler. I had to wrap my jacket around her head to keep her from biting me when I carried her out of the woods. She was a very old dog. She had a very rough night with bad swelling over a good part of her body. I did not seek treatment due to age and other chronic health problems. She survived and died suddenly maybe a year later due to an unrelated health problem.

Had a dog bit on the throat once and he swelled up for several days but was fine after aweek or so. Penicillin was the only thing we used.

Timbers can cause some damage...thats all we have around here...they are good about avoiding confrentation...but when they do bite...its a bad story

My Alsacian was bit on the nose, my guess is copperhead, by the time we got home from the walk her snout was the same size as her head. Called the vet (at a wildlife park) he said don't bring her in unless she starts struggling. She never even slowed down. She died from it about 15 years later...

I used to carry a shot in my truck for the hounds and bird dogs I got from the vet...It didn't need ref. ect...It would slow the poison down until you could get there...I think it was Cortizone or something like it. DD

had a beagle/dachsund snake dog that got bit by a copperhead at least once a year for about 10 years straight, once even on the tongue. just make sure he gets all the creature comforts and water he can get and he should be fine.

Had an Akita that got bit on the lower jaw. Head swelled up like a basketball. Vet said probally too late to do any treatment by then. The next day our neighbor called and said there is a huge rattlesnake dead in his yard with several punctures from the fight. The dog lived several years.

Every vet I've talked to said a bite to the muzzle is the least dangerous. This little girl got bit in the leg last year.
