hey guys,
I've never really shot many widgeons so to me the drakes all kinda look the same(which is awesome). If I ever mount a duck in the future, a Widgeon is going to be number one of the list! I figured I would get this out there now just in case I get lucky this year. I"ve seen many mounts on here that look great, my question i guess is there anything on them that make one better than another as far as colors and such? I really appreciate any info. Thomas

Anything that means something to you is a good one to mount. but the more mature birds usually have more white on there head..a solid dark green eye stripe and the best ones carry the solid white crown or cap all the way to the back of their head...IMO

I like to look for the long "sprig" tail feathers too.

If you get one with a all white head(tiny green patch) they call those "Storm Phase" but I've only seen a couple. One by buddy shot opening weekend
Dry Creek Outfitters - North Texas Duck, Dove, Turkey and Pig Hunts! Widgeons shall now be known as democrats. Living off the hard work of others.

the more solid white you have in the head and maroon/brown in the breast the better.

Check out this thread from the Taxidermy section on a widgeon piece Matt Smith just did for me, both of those drakes are about as good as it gets. The easiest thing to look for is a really full green 'robbers mask' extending all the way to the neck. You will be surprised how few have it, and those that do are generally fully plumed out mature birds. Out of over 300 widgeon we have killed over the past 2 seasons maybe 5-7 had it. http://www.texashuntingforum.com/forum/u...ece#Post2750892

In addition to that green head band look closely at those feathers on the back too. They stand out on a good mount like the ones in the pics above. Great mount by the way.

Whatever you wanna look at on your wall for the next 50 years is what I'd say...
Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

Shot these opening day, thought about holding back the mature one in the middle but decided to wait later in the season hopefully for a better one.
