+1....the 17 HMR is not meant to be a Coyote gun. But it is probably the best damn squirrel/rabbit/coon/possum gun in the world.
not at 20 yds, makes quite a mess of bunnies, but long range plinking on them is a blast with the 17.

Back few years ago when you could sell yotes for the hide we hunted a lot with a 17 Remington Thompson Contender. The 17 made a little hole in and then it would explode and not exit out, hide was worth more money as no damage. Never had a problem knocking them down.

no head shots , thats unethical, seen to many bunnies with jaws blown off, vitals give much more room for error.

Just because it doesnt always knock down a yote at 150 doesnt mean its junk. It has its purpose dont shoot it for what its not good for. Its always the guns fault when it doesnt perform, sometimes its target selection. +1....the 17 HMR is not meant to be a Coyote gun. But it is probably the best damn squirrel/rabbit/coon/possum gun in the world. It is death from afar to jack rabbits.. Just alot of fun.. Always felt it would smoke a coyote, nice to know .. Has done hella number on everything I have shot with it so far.. The wind sure has a big effect on it..

Walked outside to take a piss, been hearing yotes lately so I brought a flashlight out and shined around. Spotted one aprox 125 yds away ran inside grabbed my savage 93r17btvs leaned up on the fence and hit it in the shoulder, it wimpered and stumbled and limped off, I whistled, got it to stop again, this time about 150 yds away, shot again and another hit to the shoulder/chest area, I could hear it. He fell down, got back up and limped through the fence and over the highway before I could get off another shot. I used to think this caliber could take on anything, i've done it many times but here lately its proved otherwise. Time to buy another 204 i guess... I dont get it. So all of a sudden the round just stopped doing what it has in the past ? Dont make much sence.

I have had great luck with my 17's. My wife and I both own one. Two weeks ago I killed 5 yotes with mine, it dropped all of them almost where they stood. They did a little spinning around but basically dropped within a few feet of where I shot them. Two of them were at about 100 yards, two were closer at maybe 50-60 yds and one was at least 150 yds out. So from my perspective the .17 seems to be working great.
BTW - For anyone interested I do have three of Ruger's M77, brown lamimated stock, SS barrels (Ruger's version), bolt action rifles in 22 Hornet and 22 Mag, and 22 LR all topped with Leupold Varix-II 3x9x40 Matte Finish scopes that are like new, only sighted in, for sale if anyone is looking for one PM if you are interested. I will be posting in the classifieds section as soon as I take the photos

Did you find said coyote? If not I question the shot. I have heard way way way to many I made the perfect shot and it ran away statements. If you made a perfect shot it didnt run away. Besides that a 17 hmr is on the light side for shooting stuff bigger than cotton tails over 100 yards.
Hell my brother shot a yote 3 days ago with a 22 mag at 20 yards it bolted and left a trackable blood trail for over 50 yards where we recovered it, you want to smoke one on the spot you need some more fire power.
It's hell eatin em live

And yes i found it a good ways away in the bar ditch with "two" wounds, both in the shoulder, where i aimed
