Did any of you guys see the episode of trophy quest tonight where the guy kills a BIG bull moose with an open sighted 30-30?
Close shot and a good hit, it went down in 30yds
last words of the show......
"Stay tuned for next weeks show, when we go after an Alaska grizzly with a 30-30!"

No but I know the show. It is his Dad's old rifle I think. His quest is to kill as many game animals as he can in North America with that 30-30.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

It made it to the air, he'll be fine. Polar bear hunting in a seal costume would be good family entertainment.

Crazy for sure. I know a man who saw his buddy shoot a large brown bear in Alaska in the head with a .340 WBY mag and it knocked a large patch of hair off. 3030 would definately not be my first choice. Better than a switch though.

"Stay tuned for next weeks show, when we go after an Alaska grizzly with a 30-30!" Nothing wrong with a 30-30 on the moose if you want to satisfy your ego. While I worked on Alyeska Project, I had a young Eskymo friend that hunted carribou exlusively with 22 LR. (When I asked him why, he said the ammo is dirt cheap and he is shooting head shots from a 30 yards, in white camo). On the other hand grizzly bear does not have the personality of a wild cow and has a helluva lot more stamina. I always say: "there is all kinds of people out there"......
Experience is what you get, when you did not get what you wanted.......

30-30 been doin it for a long time. Just have to wait for the perfect shot, but i wouldnt risk the price of a grizzly hunt on an open sighted 30-30.

30-30 will take down most game animals. In the 60's the Magnum Craze started. Now everyone thinks you need a magnum rifle to take down game animals.
Heck on my current deer lease, everyone is shooting whitetails with Magnums while I go hunting with a 243.
You guessed it, I get made fun of, but you know what, I've shot more deer this year than the other hunters.

Oddly enough, moose are not that hard to kill. Big hearts that pump lots of blood and with a well placed shot, they bleed out fairly quick. Grizz is a differnt story. They are the top of the North American food chain and will bring it to you very quickly. Grizz is North Americas dangerous game.

Some people can also be very skilled hunters and shots with a particular rifle.

lots of 30-30 and 22lr in use up there, i like my 308 over the 30-30 but been told lots of times in the lower 48 that neither was enough gun, good thing no ones told the natives.
i am cancelling my subscription, i am tired of your issues!

Guess all the history we've heard about the "mountain men" and their 50cal hawkins rifles is a bunch of " " And the 30-30 Winchester of old never killed a "grizz" or any other big game animal.... "shot placement"--'nuff said

Shot placement goes a long way, but still lacks the kinetic energy I would prefer
