Blame Clinton, he banned them from importation with an executive order.
You can find the pre-bans, under the name HK94, for a premium price.

Yes some very subtle differences Magazine button on the HK94 unlike the paddle flap on the MP5.
There are still some availible as well as some very nice conversions done on Hk94's but they fetch a hefty price tag.

Ohh yeah almost all fo the Mp5's and Conversion Hk94's are going to be NFA Regulated weapons due to being classified as a "Short Barrel Rifle" "Machine Gun" or having a integral "Suppressor"

I am not that familiar with the two, but from what I understand, there are a few differences but nothing drastic. You might want to check the HKPro forums, or wait for someone more knowledgeable to come in here.

You can buy a semi still, but very expensive. My buddy just bought one that used to be a host sear gun. His SBR mp5 in semi ran him about 4k.

I checked W/Marty re: MP5, says he sold his 2yrs ago with a sear group...just the sear, springs , pins, ect..were $12000.00 Hope you have deep pockets...JM at the Bandera Gun Club lets folks try the WW2 Grease Gun and Uzi...at $15 a mag for bullets, and $25 to shoot it, they usually go thru about $200 in about 5 to 10 minutes....I still like single shots...Don
