I have a buddy that used to insist on shooting 4's and 6's because he'd get more hits (feathers flying). We hunted one day and I had my limit about 8:30. I swear it was 10:00 and he had 1 duck in the blind when he had used up his entire first box. He was knocking off feathers, but nothing was falling. Were shooting at 90% pintails, mallards, and gadwalls.
I handed him a box of #2's and they started falling. He insisted it was because he figured out he wasn't leading them enough.
First time I ever went Teal hunting I bought #6's and they worked fine. Used the left over shells for big duck season and had trouble knocking the mallards down dead.
I switched to #2's in 2 3/4" and never went back to anything smaller. If I can't find #2's, I will buy BB loads before I buy smaller.
I do like the 3 1/2" #3's, but in 3" or 2 3/4" I shoot 2's or larger.

3.5 #2's. Kent- Nothing will be crippled This is what I use as well. With a full choke. Is a full choke with #2's too much? What are the pros and cons of this combination?

I shoot #6 low brass and #7 low brass 1 oz. shot. It will kill them dead. I have shown it to clients time and again, that is all you need. Shoot em' in the lips and Game over! I will shoot #3 shot as well, but most the time I like #6 the best! J.J.

This should be a big problem, especially using the slower, low brass shells.

Sounds like another Duck General, I smell BS. Find the time to pattern your gun and don't go above #4 shot.

I was about to "bite" on this, but considering the source, everybody knows its just more "BarneyWho " And back to J.J.: You can hit a duck in the head, with a 30" shotgun pattern, and not put ANY pellets in the body?...........

I killed a few last season with the Xpert #6's in low brass... I was only shooting them at about 20-25 yards from an IC choke. I didn't find that it mattered much.
Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

I like 6 on ducks. But then again I usually only shoot them at < 20 yards.

Tooooo much over thinking. Unless you suck at shooting this should not be a major factor in the equation. 4 man hunt last yr jacking around the whole time. [/quote]

My dis-like for #6 shot on ducks is purely for safety reasons,.....the safety of my teeth. No doubt they will kill a duck, but the pellets do not have enough energy to go all the way through. If you happen to miss a pellet during the cleaning process, you take the risk of biting into it and chipping/breaking a tooth. A bird shot a close range with a load of #6's tends to look like swiss cheese also (unless you are J.J.). To each, their own. Everybody can use whatever size shot they want......but I KNOW none of my pellets will be in the bird.

Seriously, I have had guys come up and shoot 3.5 Black Cloud BB at ducks and all they end up with is a black and blue shoulder!!!!! Like you said...to each their own! J.J.

They do fine in a controlled shoot at decoy range with little wind but as a everyday load with all varibles, wind, extended range on spooky birds, i'll stay with #3s.

I'll be shootin 2 3/4 #4 xperts tomorrow. They were good enough to take down a few greaters last year. The way I see it it's just a matter of what your confident with if there was one clear cut answer/winner there wouldn't be so many options out there. That and we'd have nothing to talk or fight about.

J.J. ok, im a fairly decent shot and the option of "shoot em where they eat, not where they chit" is a tall order when you are hunting ducks. so if i'm not gonna shoot em (all) in the head, whats the best load? I dont want any chipped teeth!!!
Is it duck season yet?
