Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting.......holy kaka.....What a Ride!

X2 This is what we did before we got a dog. Worked pretty good unless the fish were biting. Take a rod and reel with a top water lure. Workes great

We let 'em sit until you get about 4 or 5 down and then go pick them up in the kayak all at once. If they're kicking or flapping, works even better. Live decoy

If you got still water, let em sit till the hunt is over.
If you got moving water, better start up the boat.

If I didnt have a dog, I would go out and get a dog. duck hunting without one is silly.
I like spoonie, his humor is dryer than my duck lease.

I've pretty much quit since I lost my dog. Sure the kayak works but it isn't the same.

I hunt public mostly alone. I travel long distances in my poke boat or pirouge, so sometimes having my 100+# cbr and all my gear in a little boat is dangerous and impractical. YOU DON'T NEED A DOG TO DUCK HUNT! It makes it easier to pick up a three man limit if you have a dog. If the wind is howling pick them up asap. Keep the canoe handy and hidden.... Shoot a couple and go get them and repeat.
As far as hunting the ponds goes.......ever think of using a float tube??

No you don't need a dog . But to me the pup is what makes the hunt luv to see them pups do what there breed and train to do . I use to just watch Sally head lift up because I knew birds were being decoyed in .

Bass pro sells a lure knocker that extends out to 18' and colapses down to about 5' and is easily carried.

man, thanks for all the info. Ill try the top water lure idea. I have no desire to get a dog right now. I spend more days on the road a year going rock climbing, ice climbing, backpacking, hunting, and fly fishing and working than i actually do at home...and most trips i go on i cant take a dog..so it would just not be practical for me to have one. It really has not been that difficult to duck hunt without the dog. I was just curious if there were others and how they did it.
Thanks again for the tips. I definitely got a few ideas to add to my list.

Using a fishing pole to get your ducks sounds ghetto.
To those that say a dog is not necessary, of course not but I assume you never lose cripples and are awesome shots? If so great.
I'll take a Black Female every time.

Never had a dog, so here goes- Throw rocks to "push" the duck towards the bank Let the wind blow the duck to the bank Have your son walk out to get the duck Use a long stick to get them Keep a fishing pole with a Rattle Trap in the truck Or get lucky... shoot them over land or they fall on land
And last, but not least... skillet them on the edge of the pond!
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

For me, duck hunting without a dog would be like shopping with your wife.

First duck hunt (and probably again this year) we just threw rocks past em until they floated in. One pond we had a canoe hidden under a big oak so no problem on that one though.
