Anyone ever hunted ducks on the grasslands? Thinking about heading up there for a hunt in a couple weekends before I get married. Any input welcome.

Well, got a PM telling me I needed to delete my post since people don't like throwing info out on a public spot.

Let me clarify my post a little. I have hunted ducks for years. I have never hunted on public land though and have never even been into LBJ Grasslands. I was more concerned with the camping, roads, ease of getting to the water, whether it is going to be a cluster f%%%, things like that.

I am not asking anyone to divulge their great spot to me. I planned on getting up there a day early and scouting my tail off. Just didn't want to do that and then find out it is impossible to get around or someone is probably gonna beat me to my spot I scout out.

This duck hunter was out scouting one day and saw a field with a bunch of Milk Weed in it and was stund,so he went and knocked on the farmers door and said "Sir,do you think it would be ok if I go back in your far 40 and get some of that milk weed?"
The old man said, son you can get all the milk you want.
So the duck hunter went off and about half hour later the old man
saw the boy carrying out gallons of milk from the field, the old man was amazed.
Bout a week later the duck hunter comes back and told the old man
"Sir when I was back on the 40 I notice you had a bunch of Pussywillow back there,do you think it will be ok if I go back and get me some?"
The old man jump to his feet took his pipe out his mouth and said to the boy "LET ME GET MY HAT!!!!"

Exspect lots of people, best to go during the week and even better if you just wait until after the split.

Don't hold me to this but I think it can only be duck hunted Wed, Sat and Sun. If you hunt it you won't be alone and I havnt been up there in awhile and it's probably not going to be fun if you have to walk in that's for sure.

Very crowded and deer hunters will be out there too. With this drought we have had, any place in NTX that has easily accessible water as small as those will be a mad house on weekends. My best recommendation to you is to click through a few links in that public land sticky at the top of the forum and scout you out some other places near you. But if you insist on hunting LBJ, that link is in there also. The rangers there will tell you a whole lot more than these guys will.

Congrats on the marriage. Going on 24 years now with mine.

That might be Caddo you are thinking, LBJ broke away from TPWD and now they are regulating their own rules now.

Over a few years of dropping in to LBJ I have had only one hunt where I was the only guy on the pond. That day was bitterly cold. We had to break ice. The wind was whipping. Any other day we have fought against guys shooting at ducks that were decoying into our spread; shots they could never have made. It is convenient, for sure, and the roads are great, but it is a place that draws way too many shooter rather than hunters.

This will be my second year up there. My suggestion would be to start by getting a map and talking to the people at the parks office just outside of Decatur, because there are a lot of ponds out there and some don't allow hunting. I went out there last weekend to scout, later than normal since it was youth season and didn't want to get in the way, and the ponds the ponds that I went all had hunters. My guess is that it'll be quite worse this weekend for opening weekend. Also, the water is very low so if you were planning on using a ramp to put a boat in you can cancel those plans and bring a pole the water drops off quick on some of the ponds.

Just dont go there, its that simple, ask your mother in law to buy you a private duckhunt weekend in exchange for the beautiful ring you bought your bride and see if it flys, the mother in law, not the ducks
Plus you might get shot at by a deerhunter, i can see the storie in the local papers already. Duckhunters bites a bullet from deerhunter, or another one bites the dust as far as wedding goes

Good luck to ya

My wife and I were talking about this just the other day. She said she could not stand it when I went hunting in the first couple years of our marriage. She wanted me to revolve around her. I don't remember the nut kicking, but I am sure I experienced some of it because of my hunting. Now over 20 years later, she wants me to go. When I go on one of those long hunting road trips I return to a rearranged house, new furniture might have been bought, things I would never have let her throw away are gone, things I would never have let her buy have been bought. But when I roll in from a two week hunting road trip vacation across two or three states having a great time while she is holding down the fort at home, she knows I better not say a single negative word about the changes. So in some way I guess it is still a nut kicking, but she is tactful in how it is done. I love my wife.

We get married on the 25th, day after Thanksgiving. I leave December 3rd for 12 days of pheasant and geese in North Dakota. I just blame it on customers though and it not being a pleasure trip. Its a business trip. She doesn't understand though.

Leaving on a 12 day hunting trip a week after your wedding day and without her....

Good luck with that.

My wedding day of my first marriage, I went hunting, got stuck in traffic and a goose I shot came back to life in my jeep while I was driving down the highway. It was trying to kill me. I had to stop in the middle of the highway and fight it off me. i had people get out of their cars staring into my windows as I was choking down this wild crazy flapping blue goose. I barely made it back in time to get to the church. Now that marriage; it did not last a year. Should have been an omen. Someone up there at least tried to stop me.

Your bride would not be attracted to me at all. Since we be
forum buds I will go shopping with her, carry her bags, and generally talk you up as a fine man. For a price. Bob angel
