Does anyone know of somewhere near Ballinger where I could buy bulk load black-eyed peas? I'm talking about shelled peas, here. We used them one year on a former lease in Brady and the deer absolutely loved 'em! After that year, however, we were never able to find them again. It's been said that they're an excellent form of protein... Anywhere close to the Dallas metroplex would be good, as well.

Never tried Pintos, taco. But at least you could smell 'em coming! All jokes aside... I've been reading that using shelled soybeans in your protein feeder is very effective, as well.

I refuse to feed high dollar protein until I own land. But yes the peas should work. Im just looking at trying new feeds to see if there is something they prefer and prefer quickly.

Try KN Feed store in Ballinger. They are just behind the grocery store there on Hwy 67 @ Hwy 158. They just might have the peas!
This time of year, you might wanna put down some turnips too! They may make it before any frost hits. At least if the deers don't eat the peas & turnips.... YOU CAN along with a batch of cornbread and some sweet milk!

if you cant find black eyes call pied piper mills in hamlin texas and invest in their soybean/corn mixture...it is great and will bring'em in post rut...we put some in our feeders after christmas one year and the deer flocked to them..

Just curious about that because I've seen that at several feed stores... do you have to adjust anything on your broadcast feeders due to the size of the soybean vs. size of the corn? In other words, do you ever experience problems with the feeder cloggin' up?
Also, for those of you reading, have any of you had experience with feeding soybeans from a gravity-fed protein feeder? If so, do the deer seem to prefer them over a man-made protein pellet? I'd be interested in hearing feedback on this.

I try to plant about 5 lbs. of black eyed peas in the garden every spring. Only way to keep the deer from eating them is to fence off a section. They are hard enough on the plants but once they make peas, they will wipe them out in a day or two.
