The OP (link: http://www.texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2702048/Wolf_spam#Post2702048) got a lot of nay-sayers and derision, so I thought I would post an update with additional images and info. The question was whether or not the following image was/is real (and this is a higher resolution image than the OP):

The following images are the two guys that brought down the beast, and a portion of the hunt was captured on video and replayed on Canadian television. The skull of this particular wolf is awaiting confirmation as the 2nd largest wolf on record (reportedly taken with a 30-06).

According to Richman Hobson in his book “Nothing Too Good For a Cowboy,” Black Timber Wolves weighing as much as 275 pounds are not at all uncommon (uh, yeah...right). North American Hunter Magazine (Feb/Mar 2010) reportedly tells the whole story of the hunt pictured in this image. This one (shot in Edson) supposedly weighed in at 197 lbs and was atracted to (according to the manufacturer's website) Grim's Monster Mix bear bait. So why did they shoot it? One guy said it was because it ate the bear, but who knows...

Big Woods Outdoors provides additional details and images of similar hunts (link). Alpine Outfitters promises hunts for similar critters website with images and info). And there are other outfitters that promise similar hunts (link1, link2, link3,). Mr. Clean used to do wolf hunts until he saw one of these bad boys and it scared him hairless.

Generally, I'm typically pretty skeptical about these kinds of pics, too -- and I find these both fascinating and disturbing, so I'm just gonna pretend it's not real...

Those things make our coyotes look like raccoons. Those are some big critters. If we had those around here, they'd make a walk to the hunting blind in the dark a little spookier I think.

No joke! Chances are there would be a pack so you would have to deal with more than one at a time at close quarters. Think I will just stay South of the Red River so I don't have to worry about it. bolt

I would definitely make the move of carrying a sidearm for the walk to the stand. Maybe a hand gernade as big as they are.

Even an average-sized wolf has a bite as powerful as any animal on the planet. I can not even imagine having a 200-lb wolf bearing down on you.

2nd most potent predator on the planet. Want to feel really weak?

Areas in which Siberian Tigers are reintroduced immediately experience a drastic decline in the wolf population. The dominant tigress of the area will personally assassinate all alpha-female wolves in her home range.

Very impressive animals. Those are more impressive than a bear IMO.

The one the woman is holding sure looks like it has a radio collar on it.

In the Anchorage airport in Alaska, they have a mounted wolf in a glass display case. I walked off the plane and spent a good five minutes gawking at it.

It is unreal how big these things are. And when you see one in person (alive or dead), you will not soon forget it.

Shoot, I would still rather deal with a pack of those than a single pitt bull stir .

They really are bigger then you'd expect. I've only shot one myself, but have seen at least 30. They don't usually hang around when they see you. Mine was right at 140lbs and was one of the smaller ones.

Had a buddy in alaska recently get charged by a pack of 20 wolves... With no weapon, he yelled his head off at them and stopped them at about 15 yards away. Most of the wolves wandered off, but a big female followed him within 20 yards for 2 miles back to his vehicle.

His words: "Yeah, I encountered some wolves yesterday. It looked like they were gonna have a go at me."

Those are some whoppers! Heard wolves every night, and a couple times during the day, this past summer while I was fishing in Alaska, but never laid eyes on one.

Well thank you Pug. That answers my original question. That does scare me. I cant imagine having to take one on. I think I believe it now.

They look like the bad guy from The Neverending Story.

And Trevor B, I have several friends that spend summers in Alaska. The first thing they learn when they're up there is to never be in the wilderness without a firearm.

Different world up there. You literally may get eaten if you're not careful.

Yeah those things get to be big, I have a hybrid she weighs in at about 170 I believe, her back is just shy the level of my hip. Those are bigger than average for sure, but I'm sure if they have a good meat supply they will grow to be bigger. Wolves are some seriously intelligent animals, trust me my little brat opens doors and everything else, she used to turn on the light switch at night if we would not let her outside, if she couldn't open the door because we had locked it. Or she would turn on a faucet, little annoying things that sometimes make you wish the "dog" was a little bit dumber lol. Back to the original topic though I have no doubt those things really do get to be that big out there. Especially with a good supply of meat.
