I've been hunting Llano for 4 years and still haven't fiqured out when the rut is. But I really like being up there around Thanks giving week. Deer are hungry and coming to the feeders.

If it's like around here it seems like the rut begins in late Oct. and goes through Early Dec. It never gets like South Texas where you have a real heavy rut. Does come into heat and bucks will chase them around. Then it might be quiet for a while. Then it starts again when some other does are in heat. This year it might really be different the shape some of the deer are in.

x2

seems like the hill country has two ruts and neither one are heavy each one is kind of moderate

Most areas of the state have 2 ruts. The first one being the primary and the second one coming in about 25 days or so later. Your buck to doe ratio is what make the rut seem more intense or less intense/moderate as you called it. Competition makes the rut more intense with a closer buck to doe ratio. More doe to buck makes the rut less intense since there are to many doe available to breed.

A virtue in wildlife ethics is that the hunter has no gallery to applaud or disapprove of his conduct. Whatever his actions, they are dictated by his conscience, rather than by onlookers. It is difficult to exaggerate the importance of this fact."

I take it back. Yesterday evening after the front came through I saw 4 bucks chasing after 1 doe and they were pretty serious about it. She must really be something.

From what I've seen at our place in south Llano county, the bachelor groups have boken up and I've seen a few bucks checking out does, but no hard chasing yet. I'm going to hit the rattling horns this weekend and see what shows up.
