Been scouting new places with this low water, finding a lot of great new spots that look good with food, just not many ducks. I kicked up a group of geese I couldn’t tell what they were. And finally found these guys, I could not see them well enough to ID them, but I could hear they were widgeon and gadwall, they are feeding hard....Click on pic for video...

Here is what they were feeding on, looks like milfoil and some kinda grassy weed.. Look at all the feathers, look like wideon feathers..

More of the same kinda food, other spots...

Found a lot of spots like this with grassy growth going to the water, then widgeon like that right?

Hard to tell in the video. My guess is gadwalls, but could be widgeons

I love that stuff. I pull my kayak into it and then grab several hands full of it and throw it all over the kayak. I then use it as a lay down blind. I will put the decoys all around me.

Looks like hydrilla, not great duck food but they will eat it. Might just be what we have to offer this year. It can hold some good invertebrates.

I heard widgeons and gadwall. I kept some feathers, I'll try and ID them and post them up later for fun.

Yeah me too. Taking my kid and his buddy out this weekend to scout, they are excited about it, then hopefully the boys get to hammer some ducks on youth weekend and feel they took part in the scouting and not just the shooting, youth season by far my favorite..

I was thinking milfoil but I find it hard to tell the difference. My understanding is hydrilla is a better duck food than milfoil, but the gaddies love that milfoil I have it on my lease and they chow on that stuff. Look at that video, they are chowing down on it, they get on the outside of that stuff and will eat it all to the shore..

I think Guy got it right...milfoil, or "Eurasian Watermilfoil"

http://aquaplant.tamu.edu/plant-identification/alphabetical-index/eurasian-watermilfoil/

No matter what it is...the ducks are there!

Lake Bastrop, which you can't hunt ducks on, is covered in that. Coots like to show up, but I've never seen any other birds.

I guess it only proves, there are no ducks in central Texas.

What you have there is Coon's Tail. Most puddle ducks will dine on it. They eat the bugs and the leaves. We have a couple ponds full of it. By February the ducks will have it stripped down to just stalks.

we have a spot that is covered in that stuff. if you take a rake or something like that and clear a hole in it you can put the birds anywhere you want! they always seem to pick the clear slick spot on the water over the veggitated area
