I need some help and wondering everyone's opinions or takes on this deer. He is an 8 pt. with nubs for brows and I have him at 4.5 yrs old?? Am I off on age and would you cull him or leave him be knowing we are in a drought year? Any thoughts would be great.

Depends on your other deer he has a great frame... I personally would wait another year, due to his frame

great frame but at 4.5 and no tines??????? if you have pics of him from the year before and he still had no tines then rifle if he had tines then I would say he is not a cull. IMO
now if you don't have pics I would give it another year to make sure.

Depends on what your'e trying to accomplish. But, with brows that weak, he wouldn't get to go through another rut and breed for me.

He looks healthy so I don't think drought is to blame.

Here are a few more of different deer. You can see there are a couple of deer with daggers for brows.....then there is the 8 pt and the 9 pt with hardly anything. All the bucks look really healthy, and that is why I am curious on whether or not to harvest the 8 pt.

We have been fortunate to have plenty of water sources on our place that didn't dry up. Also, we had a couple of crucial rains at the right times that other places were dying for. So I feel very lucky to have the deer looking the way they are.

Navasotbred....we have some pretty good 8's but would say average in around the 125-130 range with an occasional one upper 130's. We had to stop feeding protein the last 2 years bc of cow issues, but those have been resolved and we will be back to feeding protein Nov 1. We have lost some size due to that, and of course the drought, but when we have protein going, we have some really good results overall.

I would leave him be until next year.

Is the one with a weak side/ huge dagger brow one eyed?.

Kinda hard to tell on this copied picture, but he actually has about a 4" kicker off the back of the main beam and a short G-3 on right. I saw him briefly on the hoof with no aparent injury. Any guess on age for this one?

If this was my place i would take him...i always though 4 yr old was a good minimum to start harvesting MOST deer...IMO yes they usually will get bigger when they jump to 5 but you never know if they will make it or even if they will get much bigger..excpesially in a year like this....its just the gamble we have to decide on...and most likely this deer will be an 8 next year maybe kikers can add but mainframe points will stay the same..IMO this deer will maybe gain around 5 to 6 inches by next year if that...i just wouldnt be able to take a gamble on that when hes is this good now...

culling deer w/o brow tines is the easiest decision for culls, heck you don't have to wait for age. If they don't have them by 2 they are not going to have them at 5.......so unless your in the business of grow big culls.... you know what to do

Our problem is this...we have 8 guys on the lease, 3 of whom hunt religiously...the others go maybe 3 times a year. We need two more people to fill the lease, and can't get anyone to commit. We have a great place, with good genetics, we just can't kill all the deer we need to kill. Plus, those that go have cameras, those that don't, don't. Costs of fuel, feed, etc are higher than normal or I would have a game camera everywhere and have a guest out every weekend.

One more year. He can't do too much damage to the herd in a year
