It has been a long standing tradition in our family that when someone who has never hunted before comes out to the ranch they get to go on a snipe hunt. This Thanksgiving my son's friend had the oportunity to go. After gearing up (paper grocerie bag hoe handle and flashlight) I drove the boys (age 15) to the field. Once instructed in the art of snipe calling and bagging, The boys took off across the field shaking their bags and calling snipe. Once they were about 25 yards in we took off in the pickup and went to the house. My wife was furious that I left those poor defenseless boys alone in the field (1/4 mile down the road). What she did not know was that the boys, understanding that they had been had, turned the tables. My wife spitting gravel from the tires of the truck raced to go save the boys. The boys turned off their flashlights and hid in the brush, tickled to death at the frantic search being conducted my my wife. Soon after, the boys turned their flashlights back on and my wife picked them up and brought them back to the house. She got out of the truck, greeted by the raucous laughter of myself and everyone else. Fortunatly my buddies wife was there and able to ease her pain with a cool Michelob Ultra. So take someone snipe hunting, it is time we brought back this timeless tradition.

I went in Canada when I was 12. I did my snipe hunt along some railroad tracks. There was a big bend in the tracks...lots of trees and brush. We had seen a wolf puppy that day and I had heard stories about a big bull moose that frequented the area. So a friend of my moms takes me out with a burlap bag and a flashlight. I'm standing there with my feet holding the inside of the bag open with the flashlight over the bag. The story was that he would herd the snipes and they would head toward the light and go into the bag. I must have been there for a half hour to 45 minutes before I figured I better head back to the lodge. Everyone in the place had a good laugh when I walked in. Ahh...great childhood memories.

No hunting trip is complete w/out a god snipe hunt. I don't think I have been more scared, excited and mad at the same time than being led into the Lincoln Nat'l Forest near Carlsbad, NM . Awesome memories....and now I can't believe I believed the adults that a snipe would fly right into the bag .

There are many methods to snipe hunting. Here in West Texas the bag n tag method works the best. You need a paper grocerie sack, hoe handle (or any good stick) and a flashlight. What you do is start calling, pop the sack every now and then (this causes the wiley snipe to pop his head up). Once the snipe pops his head up, you tag him with the hoe handle and put him in the bag. The burlap / light method works better in the North

How many of you realize that you are perpetuating a myth, when there actually is a snipe and it actually is hunted?????

The low rider of kayaks. Nice hood mounts. Looks like you got a set of Briley choke tubes for the Verona.

yep, the secret is to wait after you scare them up, the fly about 20 yards, pause, and take a s@#%. Shoot when they pause. Taste like woodcock.

I took my future wife snipe hunting in east tx we were all at camp with 2 other boys we did not take them far from camp but man did we laugh when they got back! she took it really well and wants our daughters to grow up so she can take them on the adventure she had. Real bird or not that is a long tradition that will hopefully never go away.
If I put my wife in a high fence will her rack get bigger?

Some of my best memories from boy scouts were going to camp cherokee and taking the newer guys snipe hunting. They got me when i was new and we kept it going for years. I can't wait to take my son sniping when he gets a little older. One of the best hunt camp traditions out there.

So sorry to have walked up on you, but nice to meet you. I was out there very late this morning. Trying to time my hunts when I am less likely to run into the bowhunters. Met another bowhunter who was walking out as I was walking in at the gate. He said he was a gunsmith at BP. He was the only other hunter at least on that side today. BTW, at mid day there were 6 doe near that tree you were standing by.
The bowhunter I met today asked me what I was doing. Told him Snipe hunting. He asked me a whole lot of questions. I explained how when they flush they make a skreep skreep skreep sound, poop in mid air, then kick in the afterburners. Which is true. Must sound like a story one would tell on the campfire snipe hunt. I think he thought I was telling him a tall tale and that I was poaching dove or something.
