Thinking about getting into duck hunting... heard a lot about how much fun and addicting it it... my question, what's a good starter kit? i own a 870 superman with and improved cylinder choke. what kind of shells are good for duck hunting? and it seems like an endless supply of calls so what are some pretty good ones out there? anything else or any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciate it... thanks fellas

You have a great gun to start off with, that is what I started off hunting ducks with. Here is whats in my blind bag and on my lanyard.
RNT Screwdriver Echo double reed The original RNT Haydels Power Drake Whistle Haydels Double Reed Mallard
I have dozens of decoys but all you really need to get started is a dozen mallards and a dozen green wing teal.
Shells: I shoot Kent and Hevi Metal. for ducks I use 3.5 #2's .
And loose that IC choke and put a MOD or FULL choke in your gun, you will kill a lot more birds.

Get your self a dozen cheap decoys from academy. a 5 in one whistle, some waders, and some winchester experts. If you put in the scouting time you will do good.

I like spoonie, his humor is dryer than my duck lease.

If you have a place that is full of ducks close to the Corsicana area, I'll show you how to do it...

Only calls on my lanyard are a Killer Kallz Southern Breeze & a Haydels teal whistle. Give me a shout & I can hook you up with any of the calls from Killer Kallz, "The world's deadliest duck call."

Link of with some people that already know what they are doing. You'll learn a ton just by watching. Also you will save a lot of time not making mistakes you will otherwise be making.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

Also you will save a lot of time not making mistakes you will otherwise be making. senko86 for now this is the best advise. If you have private land and really want to give it a go at duck hunting then do a trade off.Hook up with some guys you know and trust start a network and find some Duck hunters that have the equipment and can teach you about ducks while hunting.BUT..........Dont get with guys that just want to hunt ducks, hook up with someone who's passion runs deep with it and is willing to teach you some things. I see that you are a bow hunter aswell, and I know how expensive that can be but duck hunting cost go to a whole new level.I cant began to tell you how much I have spent and am still spending on duck hunting. So as for now because it's so late in the game my advise would be the same as Macstar, network with friends or on forums, trade out,it will be the best thing you can do for now.

Decoys, calls, more decoys, sleds to carry your decoys, lead for your decoys, rigging for your decoys, camo clothes, blind material, blinds, leases, motels, food on the road, duck calls, more duck calls, more clothes, more decoys.... you get the point

And you will do that until you stop hunting waterfowl.
