Howdy! jmay I hunt just South of Corrigan and this weekend finally regained access to our deer lease. We had been LOCKED ot due to "Fire danger". I did see a few tracks and 2 deer early Sunday. The deer were near a pond grasing. Both looked healthy and one had a nice 14-15" spread 8pt rack. Wish you luck on your place.

My place is just a little north of Groveton (between there and Kennard) and our deer look remarkably fit. We got a few VERY timely rains during June/July that kept everything in decent shape compared to further east and certainly out in central/west TX. Hopefully you got them too.
Now this last month has been tough but we are feeding the deer and they all look healthy on the trail camera pics.Several doe/fawn pics and even a couple of sets of twins-they look OK.We have 2 ponds that are both about 1/2 full and the creek runs along our place. But we need rain-and soon!
I'll bet you will be OK if the fire didn't get you-you may even pick up some deer that have less to eat because of the fire.
Good hunting!

That's good news. Shortly after the fire, I drove up to check on things. It was close! 1.3 miles east of our gate on the northern side of 287 is right where it started..... whheeewwwww! That was close, I am glad we are on the south side. Any rain up there in the past day or so? I was worried about the fawns as well, we have at least 4 (sometimes 6-8) different fawns on the cam's consistently about this time of year. Nogalus, appreciate theyou report and if you don't mind me asking, what are y'all feeding? ETX284, awesome news bubba! Appreciate it. Are y'all feeding year round? If so, what are y'all feeding?

I'm told we got about an inch last night. I'll take it because right now every little bit helps!!
We are feeding both corn and protein-we just started the corn about a month ago and this is the first year they have taken to the protein well-presumably because of the drought. The protein has been out since January. My deer have always liked the corn better and will in most years ignore protein altogether if corn is available.Plus hogs are heck on the protein and my deer will only reluctantly jump into a feeder pen so I fight this batlle every year.I also put in fall food plots of oats and some kind of deer blend around Sept 15th-they work great every year but they will flock to them if the acorn crop is not good(as I presume will be the case this year).

I am with ya on the food plots, Sept 15 might be a no go this year if we dont get some rain! Do you have a tractor or access to a tractor with a disc? We have one on our place and I religously, everyt time we go up, disc a row or two along the wood line. I havent even bothered discing any others due to the drought. My idea behind this is promoting new forb growth along the woodline and discing a preplanned food plot area will incourage greater moisture depth in that area. Provided you have moisture! The acorn crop should be a saving grace this year, should see alot more deer in October during bow season. What protein do you feed and whats it costing ya if you dont mind me asking?

I used to use Purina and it was running about $12-14 a 50 lb. bag. Lately I have been buying some in bulk here in Central Texas and figure it to be costing me about $8-10 per 50 lbs.
I have a guy who watches over and takes care of my place and he does all the tractor work.Your discing along the woodline sounds like a good idea.
I also planted about 25 fruit trees but the drought has gotten about 2/3 of them already and will probably get the rest. I guess I'll try again next year...

I bought a few persimmon trees from this NWTF last year and I have had them at the house and plan on putting them out when ever we get some rain.... http://www.outdoordealhound.com/c-130-land-management.aspxI also joined the arbor day foundation and for 15 buck I got 10 trees. The redbuds are groing at the house now, I will put those out next year. I dont have enough feeders to buy in bulk like that, but if you hear of any cheaper protein up our way or if you have some protein you want to get rid of holler at me please sir.

Do any of you know of a quality bow hunting operation near Corrigan? I am starting a job there in November and would like to hunt some evenings or mornings. Thanks for any info.
