I just moved to Boerne, TX from Arizona. I've been in TX for 48 hours and know nothing about where I live and if deer hunting is even an option. In two days I have been worned twice that I should never (ever!!) tell people I'm not from Texas, so I am expecting nothing more than a luke warm reception from y'all. Hey, I can't lie.
My question: Will a new guy, who knows nobody, have any chance to archery hunt for hogs or deer? What should my approach be? Open my wallet? Look for public land? Tell everyone I'm a native of Texas?
Just looking for a headsup from you kind folks...
Thanks, TT

Welcome my friend - best decision you ever made.
As far as hunting - that area has a bunch of deer and hogs. I would suggest you look at getting on a lease. It is pretty late in the game for this year. You might check the local paper or the feed store and see if anything pops up.
Good luck

I'm from Boerne (actually one of the few lifers left here), if you don't want to pay to hunt then you might try to figure out how to hunt the Guadalupe River State park. I think they have some kind of draw system there, not really sure though. As far as to the question of where in the heck am I? Your now in a over priced, first freaking time it rained in months, not much to do here, the lake sucks for fishing small town city. Ohh and

There is some public land for archery or shotgun hunting. Check TP&W - Texas parks and wildlifes website Lots of good hunts for a good price, check out my website!

Get a Texas DL ASAP/ don't want to pay out of state fees do you. You are also very close to old San Antonio, lots to do in that area.

Just messin with ya man. Welcome to Texas! You now live in a state that is better than 49 other states. You're definitely in the right place as far as deer hunting. Lots of great hunting in that area. You're best bet is to meet as many people as you can, and ask around. You will be paying to hunt. Everyone does these days. Ask people you work with. I don't know your line of work, but oil field guys "land men" especially are always in the know. If you really need to hunt this year, I'd try to book a day hunt for four days or so. It'll give you a taste of how the deer are there, and you don't have to pay for the lease/corn, but still have a good shot at getting a nice deer. You will see a lot of deer in the hill country.

Welcome to Texas, most people dont take this long to get here. You're in a great part of the state for both hunting and fishing. Just do as everybody above has recommended and you should have a great time getting into the groove. If I can help let me know. Ron www.twistedwillowhunts.com

There are more deer in the Hill Country of Texas than anywhere else in Texas. They invade subdivisions, and are even smacked on 1-35 in downtown San Antonio. Finding them is not hard, finding a place to hunt for a reasonable price is. Grew up in the hill country around Boerne, and some land owners are awfully proud of their land. Good luck, have fun. Welcome to Texas - your gunna love it here!

From the picture Im going to say problem solved.
If not, there are alot of resources for finding hunts. There are a TON of hunters in Texas so hunting spots fill fast. We duck hunt on public lakes alot and found this year on craigslist a nice couple hundred acre lease 15 min from the house. There are usually alot of day hunts around on craigslist also which I have done in the past. If you dont have alot of time and money to invest the day hunts aren't bad. TPWD has a hunter connection area on thier site thats not bad or you can google some lease finder sites that make you pay to view. If money is tight, do what my friends did and get a friend with a lease!!!
GL and Bourne in Fall is a cool place.

Welcome! Better late than never. Man, in Texas there is all kinds of hunting opportunities and contrary to popular opinion, there is an abundance of public hunting that you can enjoy while you're getting you feelers out there for leases. To be honest, I've seen more deer on public hunting land than on any place I've ever paid to hunt and until that changes I will not pay for a lease. Check out TWPD Type 2, Corp of Engineers, and Nat'l Forrests. Try the first two before the third for great bow hunting, Nat'l forrests in my experience haven't produced the opportunities of Type 2 and COE, but most of the time you can use a rifle. Good luck
