Im new on the website but i have been watching for several years. I am an avid waterfowler and i love to hunt. But anyways i am 14 and am hoping to be able to hunt during the youth season. I have 40 bucks and i need a new call. I plan to hunt a big lake in north texas. I am not sure what call would be best for this. I am good at calling and i know how to use a single reed. What would be the best call for the money. And from what read i think i am allowed to shoot geese in the youth season? Please correct me if i am wrong.

I started with a BG double nasty II. Great call for the price.

There are a lot of duck calls for under $40.00. I would go to one of the retail shops and blow as many as you can to find the one that works best for you and that would be the one I would buy.

As far as me, I use a Echo cocobolo timber ($45.00) and a Dirty Joe “Little Dirty” ($35.00 on the internet)

Get an Echo Diamondwood double reed wood/poly. Great starter call that is very forgiving, has decent range, and a great low end. You ain't on stage so you don't need a single reed. While I enjoy running a single, I still have this call and like to use it when working tight birds and late season. Good luck to ya.

Agreed, the echo is a great starter call especially for the price. I had the Diamondwood and it cracked (my fault). Replaced it with cocobolo, still one of my favorite calls.

Reason I asked was,

There is a duck calling contest at Cabelas this weekend.

There should be some pretty good callers there, that could help you out.

You can also test out several calls to see which one you like the best.

Get the Echo. The RNT is a single reed, and IMO , single reeds sound best either all wood or acrylic, not poly. Single reeds with poly insert sound hollow to me. Just my

cabelas has a crazy sale right now on waterfowl calls. check out their website. things that were out of your price range before may be on the money with the sale price. also blow the call before you buy it. what gets good ratings on the net and looks cool in pics may actually suck in real life or you may have a tough time running it. plus its fun trying different calls out.

Just saw that sale, worth taking a look at,

the sale is actually what got me to wnat the echo. im not sure how long the sale is though. i want a call that is gonna have enough volume for a big lake. Im not sure what a lake in north texas is gonna be like sa far as terrain. But in michigan when i lived there the managed areas we hunted were jsut flooded corn and cat tails, with some timber, so you didnt nesicarily need a loud call just a call that sounded good. But in arkansas in the flooded rice and soybeans, it was different, you needed a loud call.

While the diamond wood Echo has decent upper range, it still ain't gonna hold the jockstrap of an acrylic as far as volume. Don't know your calling abilities but if you are wanting good volume you need a single reed acrylic, IMO. Welcome to Tx though and a loud call ain't gonna do nothing but scare the birds more than they already are. Too many folks screaming at the birds. You will do much better with a subtle call. Let Barney and Fred, with their high ringing MVP's, do the work of running the birds over to your blocks where you can coax them with subtle quacks and cuts. Don't get me wrong, sometimes with a howling wind a call with a little more volume can be good. But that is what the other loops on your lanyard are for. I hang 2 calls around my neck for both situations. One when I need to get their attn if they are far off and another to work and finish close birds. Again, my

I live in Dallas and have hunted all the lakes north and east of the metroplex. I use the Echo cocobolo timber double read and a cast acrylic Dirty Joe double read timber and have no trouble getting ducks in on any lake here. If you do your home work and scout well you will be able to get where the ducks want to be and just like Homey da clown said using simple quacks and cuts will get the job done well.

I have the echo cocobolo and it isn't hard to blow at all.

calling is over rated

They are easy to blow. I have had it for about 4 years now and I love it. It has a very ducky sound and I use it to finish ducks to the hole. I would go to one of the retail stores and try it. I know Cabelas in fort worth and in Allen have them instock.

Depends on the place. Rervoir hunting... yes.

Back woods timber... no.

single reed on the big resevoir. only way to go. if you cant run it right away then practice till you can. you'll dominate the public waters once you learn it. you can do soft feed chatter and quacks all the way to flock turning hail calls, where as a double reed will limit your ability to pull ducks from long distances.

Wish I would've seen this a few days ago. I could've hooked you up with a Killer Kallz Southern Breeze for just a few bucks more than that & you'd never look at another RNT or Echo again.
