What are some important things I need to know when hunting them?
Is it anything close to Dove hunting?
Thanks

I am also going for the first time near sunray in moore county this weekend there are four of us going and I am the only one who has never been. What size shot do most of you use I have heard either 4 or 6 shot

Nothing like Dove hunting. Be ready for a lot of walking and some more walking if you are hunting wild birds.

Be ready for birds to flush from cover that you swear a sparrow couldn't hide in much less a bird the size of a skinny chicken.

The birds are big and fast. Don't let the size throw you off. When they come up, they come up quick and get out of there fast.

I like #5 shot. Some prefer 6 other prefer 4.

I hunt in the Kress/Plainview area. Nothing like dove hunting, like stated above. If you are walking grain fields, you will need to walk them at a steady fast pace. Preferably with blockers at the end of the field. If you are going to hunt CRP fields it is better to walk at a slow pace stopping every once in a while. It seems that when you walk and stop the birds get nervous and flush. This is from my experience of hunting that area.
Good Luck!

Oh yea, I shoot 12ga. 6 shot if I anticipate there might be quail mixed in. And 4's if not seeing any quail.

The old wiley pheasant will flush fast, loud and fly mostly straight, not like bobwhites or dove. You'll use all traditional wingshooting movements; passing shots, high overheads and straight away flushs. Practice shoulder mounting your gun several times after you get dressed for the hunt. Placing the stock into your shoulder with heavy coats and vests is different than warm weather t-shirts. Get your cheek down on the wood, look straight ahead and swing the barrel well past the bird before you shoot. Most misses on pheasant are behind the birds. Go for solid head shots with #5 high brass. Oh yeah, only shoot at the ones with red-heads.

JKK, we are going to be up in lubbock the weekend of 12/15 to chase some phez around, and I actully think we are staying in plainview. is there a place close by that maybe the chamber of commerce has hunts you can pay for and hunt the local farms?

Always be ready. The minute you get lazy or distracted, a rooster will flush within five feet of you and you'll miss the easiest shot of the day.

gr- you could probably call the chamber in Plainview. I always just go with a friend of mine that grew up around there. He has lots of connections with landowners. I know that the chamber in Olton, Dimmit and I think a few other around there do hunts. Thats not to bad of a drive. I will ask around for more info.
Good Luck

Me and a friend are headed to Hart this weekend and they put on a hunt with the Lions club. They get $100 for the rest of the season after opening weekend. I was going to take the dog but decided not to after hearing some reports of people still seeing snakes even though the temps have been lower and I have not gotten her the vaccine yet. Guess we will be doing a lot more walking.

Agree with alot said here. 4 or 5 shot if not expecting to find quail & 6's if you think you'll bust a covey. Don't let the tail of a rooster trick you into shooting at his body, you've got to lead the head and follow through on those suckers. If you don't have dogs I'd run to every downed bird even if you think its dead. Don't know how may times I've seen those tough guys get up and run when they looked dead on the way down. Hope you have a safe successful trip.

I would agree with you, but then I would be wrong too.

I'll be going with GR on this trip. Do you have any idea of what the rates are to hunt these spots. I've heard around $40 for unguided. That's really all we are looking for.

You guys are plumb out of luck. Sounds like you are doing this stuff at the last minute and sorry to break it to you, but you wont find an available motel room for the opening wkend of pheasant season in panhandle. Plus, you wont find any land to hunt b/c it is already leased up for the wkend or family and friends will be huntin all wkend. You must have nevr been in the panhandle for opening wkend. So now you know, and good luck.

You really don't think you're the only one that could have possibly thought about or considered that?

Marcstar- best of luck. You should just give the chambers a call. Might do a little door knocking, I have some buddies that get alot of access that way.

Anyone know of Dutton (spl) or Shelburn families in Tulia?
Just wanted to know if they are good places and good people.
These are just two of the places I know of that we are going.
