I'm of 2 opinions on this one.

My first response would be yes, plain and simple, I want blood coming out both side.

My second would be not necessarily. The longer that broadhead stays in there, the more damage it creates.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I would say it is better, but not necessary. People kill deer ALL the time without having complete pass throughs.

Both shots kill. I shot two hogs to day and both dies within 100 yards with no pass thrugh.

Put a hole in the vitles and it will die. Pass throughs are cool though. Had one when the deer stood there like "what the heck just happened" and then "man, I'm not feeling so good". He just laid down and died.

A pass through is helpful for tracking as the blood trail is typically more pronounced. However, I had a bad shot years ago and hit the deer in the hind quarter. Yes, I know, a terrible shot. However, as the deer ran the broadhead did what it was designed to do and severed several arteries, leaving a HUGE blood trail and dropping the animal in less than 100 yards.

I wince whenever I do not get a pass thru. Never lost anything and never had anything go more than 50 or so yards with a pass thru. Lost a doe that I did not get a pass thru on a couple of years ago, and have had to do some serious tracking on other animals that I didn't get a pass thru on. Would much rather see the arrow pass thru.

I myself would prefer every shot be a pass thru. But alot has to do with the animal itself. If the animal is moving when the arrow hits him theres a good chance that his body will "catch" the arrow so to speak knocking the foward energy out of the arrow. For instance : almost every deer I've shot has been a pass thru. but once I shot a rabbit, yes a rabbit, and he took off with my arrow. and this was with a Bowtech Tribute.
But to answer your question...NO its not completly necessary. but again...this is just my .02

the pass through is great, but i recently psted about my distaste for crimson talons for the lack of complete passs throughs. Needless to say, I am no longer shooting them. But, I did have kill shots; last deer ran a mere 50 yds and dropped after a double lung heart.

I have always recovered any deer that had a complete pass through, but the only deer that didnt have one I never found. AdgerC15 those broadheads have always done the trick for my friends and I. IM sorry to hear that your disapointed with them.

Pass throughs are great but a quartering away and sticking it in the backside of opposite shoulder has worked for me on my last two Kansas bucks. When they run they grind that broadhead with that shoulder movement doing a tremendous amount of damage. Also as long as you get lungs they bleed from their mouth with every breath leaving additional blood to trail.

fred bear liked to shoot the hind quarter just to severe the femoral artery, and a spinal tap drops em were they stand, so no a pass thru aint totally ness. but it does generally help em to bleed out quicker and yep a nise trail ta follow toooo!

they dont start to lose blood from the mouth and nose for a few minutes after the initial impact of the arrow.

Not being confrontational at all AdgerC15 but the last two I double lunged were dead in 20 to 30 seconds and where one of them jumped a cross fence it looked like the ground was spray painted where he landed on his front legs expelling a large amount of air and blood. Very few deer will live past 30 seconds with a double lung shot (IMHO) if it takes minutes you might want to try a different broadhead. I use spitfire pros in 100 grain.

Old school of thought was that you wanted it to stay in so it could do more damage. New school(and in my opinion, better) I want a hole on both sides so I get a better and faster blood trail. Face it, if you hit'em right, it's gonna be a short one anyway.I lost a big spike I shot earlier this year(first lost deer in 12 years)so now I'm in favor of exploding broadheads!

No...but a pass through shot in the vitals will make the blood trail much shorter.

I killed this doe without getting pass trough but I had to track her a good ways. Luckily, I had a good blood trail to follow.

Love the pass throughs, but not necessary. Put the broadhead in the right spot and let it do its job.
