Best/Luckiest/Worst shot I ever made was all one in the same and happened 45 years ago when I was 8 years old. Momma Mallard always put pecans out in a bird bath in our back yard for the squirrels to eat. I was in the back yard with my Big Chief bow…(you know those little fiberglass re-curve jobs with the blunt arrows)….one summer day flinging arrows at anything and everything and suddenly a big fat squirrel hops up in that bird bath and starts to munch down on the free pecans. Well, ‘ole Smiling Mallard made a very effective 10 yard stalk and unleashed a monstrously long 4 or 5 yard shot that hit said squirrel square in the head killing him instantly. Being a kid I was absolutely thrilled and ran into the house excitedly telling Papa Mallard and Momma Mallard of my shooting prowess. Best shot ever because everyone knows you couldn’t hit anything with those bows using your hand as an arrow rest and that incredible 15 fps arrow speed. Luckiest shot ever….for the same aforementioned reasons. And Worst shot ever because Momma Mallard was some kind of pizzed that I had killed one of her “pet” squirrels. My elation quickly turned to tears when Momma Mallard gave me several swats to the back side and then took my beloved bow and my Daisy BB gun away from me for three weeks. I remember like yesterday though, my dad walking by me as I sat dejectedly on the couch and saying “Nice shot Bud”. Mallard that's sad, funny yet sad.

I must admit I'm not the best shot .If I'm not "locked in" with a good rest there's no telling where the bullet went. But when Jupiter aligns with Mars I can "whack with the best of them".

it has to be my first bow kill. I hadn't seen many deer to the date that a young and dumb 3point walked out on thanksgiving day (was going to hunt with bow until I got one). He came in behind me but I knew the path he was following and he would end up on my left side perfectly broadside at 20yds . I had already decided to shot him when the wind turned.. he smelled me, backed up and turn around. adrenaline and excitement (and the fact that I had buddies still in camp) took over and I foolishly took a 40yd shot wrapped around the tree and shooting through a 3' x 3' window in a holy tree. The arrow hit its mark and had a clean pass through. was a great shot that I never should had never taken.

I moved to TX from CA about 3 years ago and I hadnt really every hunted anything except squirrels and pigeons. The first morning of deer season I took one of the hired hands with me and my Grandfathers 30-06 that he had given me just before I left to move out here and we went for a drive around the ranch. In the tall brush between 2 pivots on the edge of the ranch up on a hill I saw what looked like a doe so we drove and stopped and I jumped out of the truck and took aim. I knew it was a long shot so I aimed high and when I pulled the trigger we heard a bang and then watched her jump then drop. As we were celebrating my hired hand started yelling and waving in spanish and I just figured he was excited about the shot, until the blood came running down my head. I scoped myself good. Went and retrieved the doe, gutted her out then went to the hospital for stitches. Went back and ranged it later that evening and the shot was 440 yds... I might look like harry potter now with the scar over my eye but It was awesome none the less.
My grandfather passed away 2 weeks before that happened and I cant but feel like he was there with me smiling as I killed my first deer.

I rattled in my first and largest buck at the time. He came running in and at about 50 yards or so I picked up my rifle and took the shot at the front of the chest. He turned and ran to my right through some trees. I wanted to get a second shot in him so I followed and squeezed the trigger when he passed an opening. His head fell down and he flipped end over end. The shot entered just behind the ear and exited the back of the jaw on the other side. It cut the spinal cord off of the brain. It was very lucky because I was shooting for the chest. Definately not the greatest, but the luckiest.

Greatest shot was a doe I took at 604 yards with my TRG 300 Win Mag. We were laying prone covering a large field. I lasered several times, and just before the shot, she was 604 yards out. I fired, recovered from recoil, and watched the 190 grain SMK bullet hit her broad side. She ran about 30 yards, looked back wondering what that was, and toppled over. I hit her within 2 inches of where I was aiming. It was awesome.
The coolest shot I've seen was on a walking turkey at 640 yards off the hood of a Jeep with an AR-10 in 308 shooting a 175 SMK. Jay (North Texas Rifle Precision) barrel-rolled that turkey on the first shot! It was awesome! (And he still has me beat by 36 yards with the longest kill!)

I was at my sisters place in Floresville when i saw a couple of yotes chasing a very young calf about 350yds away. Her husband just bought a "new to him" 30-06 with no scope and it was the only thing with ammo near so i grabbed it to shoot at the yotes with. They were on a full run and almost on the calf when i got it loaded and snaped off a shot. I was trying to scare them off because i didn't think i would be able to actually hit any of them when i saw the lead dog roll. The others scattered away and i handed the gun back to my sister, not saying a word about it, then picked up the conversation where it left off. Truly that was all luck but i played it off like nothing.

This is one of the most interesting threads I've read here. Anyway here is mine. My wife and I walk up on the hill at the Tac Pro 1,000 yard line on a fairly windy day, which is typical there. A couple of guys are set up on the concrete benches with 1000 yard benchrest guns, rests with levers, pullies, and the full regalia. They are aiming at clays on the berm which is 1017 yards. Their shots are blowing left and right by feet with each shot. Lots of cussing and mumbling going on. I put a ground cloth down, pull my rifle out and go prone on the bipod with a bag. My wife is watching through a spotting scope and points out a yellow golf ball on the berm and says go for that. The two guys look at her like she is crazy and start to smirk and laugh at her, which I did not particularly appreciate. I really bear down, focus as hard as I can, and... first shot, cold bore, bang, hit and the ball pops. She jumps up like we hit the Texas lottery. They stand up, do not fire another shot, pack their stuff and leave without saying a word to her. I probably could not do it again in a million years, but it sure was sweet doing it that one time. Hill Country and Hard Knocks, congratulations to both of you.

I have read this thread beginning to end several times and have enjoyed it immensely. It reminds me of driving in my grandfather's hunting 'truck' a 77 Toyota Corona, listening to the 70+ years of hunting stories. Thank you all and hopefully there are more stories to come.

We weren't hunting, but on the grenade range at Ft. Walters in Mineral Wells, I hit the center "man" in a squad at 300m with a M203 using practice rounds. Pure luck, no question about it, but it did earn me bragging rights in the unit.
Friend, I wouldn't harm thee for all the world, but thou art standing where I am about to shoot.

I was about 8yrs old, my dad had a bunch of fellow cops out at the house for a bbq and skeet shoot. One of the officers said for me to get in at the end of the line... 2 officers peeled off and it left my dad and I. Dad yells pull, misses and I raise up the 410 I was handed and blast it! My dad got ribbed for months about that. 54 yd shot on a coyote with my bow. She ran 15 yds and crashed.

My first rabbit, first kill really.
We were out spotlighting for rabbits and I was doing my normal by being the guy with the spot light. We found one, I had it locked on, and the guys in the truck kept missing. I swear they threw out at least 30-40 rounds, rabbit never even flinched. I got pissed, so I grabbed the drivers .40 auto that I had never even shot before. Still holding the spotlight, I took quick aim, fired and took off the rabbit's head at about 15 yards
We ended up with a bunch of rabbits that night, made one hell of a big ol' awesome stew.

Couldn't narrow it down, so I picked three (will make em quick): 1st was a doe that I shot running at 625 yards. Two witnesses and verified with range finder. Missed around 200, nicked her at around 400, and the last hail mary hit her right behind the shoulder. 2nd was a rabbit at 100 yards with a .22 mag. Two buddies were trying to shoot a jack rabbit in a field and after every shot the rabbit would run about 10 yards and stop. They emptied two clips and decided the gun was off. I got out of the truck, walked over with one shell and hit it..told em to get in the truck. Good story, but it was pretty much luck. Sighted in the gun later and it was off 3rd was a red fox running at 100 yards. He was skipping at 50 yards on the first shot. After the first shot he hunkered down and became a blur but made the mistake of making a half moon and came back in the same clearing. Second shot rolled him. It was one of those shots that you wish someone was there to witness, because in all honesty...I was shocked

My greatest shot was just last year. It happened to be an average size doe. To tell the story correctly let me recall some history. Memorial Day weekend 2007 I went to the hospital not feeling well. End result was a quadruple bypass. Spent the summer rehabbing. Ended up missing hunting all year except spring turkey season. Jump ahead to 2008. The day was July 14, 2008. I had been back to work several months. That day started off normal. After being at work awhile my right arm started hurting and I had a pain in the back of my neck. I finished the day and went home. That night I was having problems walking. I went to the hospital and the next day the MRI said I had a stroke. That day I became disabled. Lost some use of my right side. Yes I was right handed. Not a good day in my life. Thus began a long road ahead of me. Seasons 2008 thru 2009 were written off. No one hunted in my immediate family. My Father gave up hunting years ago. My FIL always came up with excuses. Several times I thought about selling all my fishing and hunting equipment. The decoys are gathering dust and the boat has become a shade spot for my Lab. The year 2010 was not a good one in the beginning. My soon to be ex-wife served me with papers and wanted out. Not a good thing when you are going thru therapy. Bright side is I retired my wheel chair and became good friends with my quad-cane. Then I could venture outside with my Lab. All those years I had been entered dilligently into the TPWD drawn hunts. I was drawn in 2010 for an alligator hunt at Murphree WMA. Even though I had a boat no one seemed wanting to assist me. It is heck being a disabled hunter. So I missed out on a gator hunt. That same year I was drawn for an either sex deer hunt at Brazos Bend. I was not going to miss that hunt. I had been driving for a while. I had learn to become left handed. Now the challenge was to shoot left handed. Went to the range and shot for the first time since 2007. About a seven inch group at 100 yards. Not bad for one handed. The morning of the hunt I drove to the park. I had called ahead to let the staff know I was coming and I would need assistance. The staff was great. They took me out for the hunts and helped me into the blind. The blind was nothing more than a circle of concrete mesh and burlap but it felt good to sit in it. Two days of hunting and no deer but I was still upbeat. The last morning came and I asked for God's Blessing. Something was going to happen I just felt it. I was sitting in the blind since 5AM and watching the woods come alive. About 7:30 five does came out. Resting my 6MM on the blind I aimed for one of the does and shot. I knew I pulled the shot. When I shot I aimed for the shoulder but hit her in the head. I managed to crawl out of the blind then grab my cane and hobble about seventy yards to where she laid. I had no one to share that moment with but God. I knew he guided my shot. Yes I thanked him. The staff was very helpful in taking care of my deer. You see knives and balance issues do not mix well. I drove home that afternoon. The next day went to the processor and taxidermist. Of course I had the hide done. That doe is a trophy. I will never forget that shot. I have one photo of the doe with my cane taken by my cell phone. I just do not know how to post it on here. Well that is my greatest shot. I still remember that shot as if it was yesterday. All great stories but it just doesn't get much better than this. God is great !!

Not necessarly lucky, but funniest.
I was bowhunting in Bosque County in a tree stand. I had a small 6 chasing a doe all around until a big 8 came through. He started chasing the 6 and the doe all around beneath me. I drew back about 4 times to see them run off and come back. Finally the 8 stopped for a shot close to the 6 and doe. I drew and sent the arrow about 25 yards away. What I did not see was a small stump about 3 feet off the ground and about 2 inches in diameter right next to the deer. My arrow nicked the side of the stump causing the back of my arrow to whip around and smack the 8 right upside the head. I had a mechanical broadhead and it expanded against the stump causing it to flip around. I wanted to vent something fierce but could not help but laugh at the fact the big 8 thought that poor little 6 had "B---H" slapped him. He chased that little sucker all over the place in full stride, non-stop for quite awhile. The mental picture I get reading this story has me in the floor and nearly crying LAUGHING!!!

My luckiest shot was while hog hunting out of my Jeep. I was driving, crawling through a pasture at midnight, and had my SKS laying across my lap. A hog jumped up almost right in from of the Jeep, and took off running for the woods to my right. I stepped on the gas and swerved between it and the woods to run it back out in the open. My friend was standing in the passenger seat holding the roll bars, but could not get a good shot of the hog. When I realized the he was not going to shoot, I picked up my SKS and steered with my left knee. I had to watch where I was driving, so I held the rifle chest high and pointed it out towards the running hog. I intuitively squeezed off a shot and hit him in the spine. He tumbled end over end, and I set my SKS down and made a u-turn. He was still alive, so I shot him again in the heart. My friend Sam kept saying, "I've always wanted to do that!" It was pretty funny.
Awesome stories! Hey send me the shells from your lucky shots and I can make them into jewelry you can proudly wear.
