Allright,
No experience here. What are the pros and cons of neutering? Male Brit, 5 years old. Physically active, outdoors, lots of hunting. He's sired one litter. Are there any physical or attitude advantages?
Your thoughts?

I just adopted a 5 1/2 year old DD. He came home and kept trying to have his way with my female DD. I had him neutered and he hasn't tried it since. I don't know how he was before, but he is an excellent dog now.

just had my four year old lab neutered cause i just got another female chessie and didn't want any chesadors. only con I have about it was that he ate off the stitches within a day, so i had to keep him crated up for two weeks. so there is the possibility of infection. but he's fine now. seems to be more focused on work and less on pissing on everything and trying to hump other dogs. hasn't gotten fat as some will tell you. i keep him on a diet though. hasn't become less active. we will see this pheasant season if he still has the drive he once had.
overall, i'm happy i did it. although that is just one experience, others will have both good and bad experiences i'm sure.

I saw a difference in my GSP after we neutered him. He's seems more focused. However, he still marks like crazy, so don't expect that to stop.

Saw thiss and had to inquire. I have a 3 year old GSP that I just had neutered, and the dipstick Colleyville doc left the empty bean bag in place. Why would they do that? I have been tempted to have my doctor friend give him a local and cut the rest off.

They dont cut the sack off, it shrinks up. It's not like castrating a calf.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

I heard the new fashion thing for dogs are neuticals...Testicular prosthetic implants for neutered pets! I have a male Vizsla that's neutered, if his drive was any higher, well...you get the picture. Muscle tone, stamina, prey drive...all over the top. He still marks, but no limitations as far as I can tell.

I had PeeWee neutered twice a few years ago. First time they left the sack in place (as they always do) and about three weeks or a month later, it was full again! Took him back to the same vet, whose comment upon examining him was, "This can't happen!" and rather than fixing PeeWee up under warranty, charged me about twice as much the second time. Claimed it turned out to be "scar tissue", but you'll never convince me he didn't grow another set. Now, he doesn't have anywhere to put 'em. I changed vets after that. That was years ago, and he hasn't put on weight, nor has his energy reduced. He's still the outlaw he always was. Fellow told me once, "It's a wonder he will do anything at all for you. First you named him PeeWee, then had him neutered. That's adding injury to insult!".

How old should you wait before neutering? Vets always say to get Pups done early. Had one dog snipped at about 4 months, and he always squatted to pee. That's just embarrassing. I've got a male gsp and am thinking about neutering , but I still want him to be a boy dog.

Well his empty bean bag is still there. Looks like a fifty cent piece hanging from his crotch. I guess I will have to get it removed since it didn't disappear on its own. I don't get it.

i too was questionable on leaving the sack on. I was like, "i paid to have his nuts cut off, and i want the whole procedure." haha felt like i got ripped off or something.
however, after reading online, they do that because it is less invasive with a smaller incision, so less chance for infection.
whatever...

Just get some scissors and cut the bean bag off. Make sure you have some EMT GEL available.

How about some more info about the physical and demeanor changes from those of you who've done the deal?

As far as demeanor, my dog calmed down a bit around the time we had him neutered. However, I hesitate to attribute that to the procedure rather than him just maturing and getting out of his puppy stage.
I was told by the owners of the place where we sometimes board him that they definitely saw a difference in how he interacted with other dogs. I guess he started think in with the end of his body with ears.

The only one I have had neutered did get fat, but I blame that on laying inside on a pillow or in his kennel all day, not the neutering. He was never a big running dog to start with, so probably would have gotten fat regardless as lazy as he is.

I have neutered several with good luck on each. No noticeable weight gain and an improved attitude on some but not all. I have always done it to prevent an accidental breeding.
