I've been shooting skeet some and really enjoy it. Only problem is the wait time between rounds at PSC can get very long. So I tried 5 stand since hardly anyone else was doing it.

It was fun, but humbling. I used and IC choke in my 28" 12 gauge. Some of the shots seemed kinda long for that choke. Am I right? If so, what choke should I use?

Thanks,

Allen

Some of the shots were in the 40-50 yd range.

Thanks for your advice.

I'm using Remington Gun Club 8s 1 1/8oz 1145fps. Would you suggest something different?

I try and choke for the longest 1/4 of targets...not the longest. I also like 7.5's for anything over 30yds and 8's for less.

If you have an over under it definitely helps because you can have one open choke and one tighter and swap which barrel fires first based upon which the order you want to take the targets.

99% of the time I have light mod in my auto and you could weld it in there. I can't think but a couple of times all year I have changed my choke.

Before I could make a suggestion on a choice of choke, I would have to ask your skill level and what are you trying to achieve?

Anything in the beginner to novice area, I would suggest sticking with the IC and hit as many targets as you can. The wider pattern on the IC choke will give you a few more hits on some of the closer/faster targets. As already stated, use 7 1/2 shot for the longer targets.

If/when higher scores start to matter to you, I would suggest Light Mod to Mod. You want to have a tight enough pattern to be able to break every target on the field.

These were my first two rounds at five stand, so I was a bit lost. I have shot ~12 rounds of skeet. I'm using a Weatherby SA-08 28" barrel. Love this shotgun. I was using an IC choke for the 5 stand and skeet. Now I have a Briley skeet choke. I'll keep using the IC for 5 stand and try some 7.5 shot.

for sporting, and 5 stand a light mod will be your all around best choke. With practice you will improve quickly. The ic will do you no good in a 5 stand event unless all targets are close.
