What do you make of this guy - Late fawn from last year or early fawn from this year?

Hard to tell but would let him go and see what he becomes. Might just be a tiny deer or if a this year fawn think of his potential. One thing about him, he won;t eat much

11 years ago on a lease in Hamilton county I passed on a buck early in the season that I still wish I had taken. He was an 8pt a good inch outside his ears but I bet that buck did not weigh 60 lbs. He came in to rattling.

That buck was born late last year and would be 1.5 this fall. IMO he will not ever amount to much since he is so small. With this drought he might not ever do much for body size.

We have some deer that are always smaller than the native deer for our area. They were relocated from PK to Aledo and you can tell the difference between the two gene pools.

Maybe it's a Dik Dik? Notice the deer beside him is a buck also. I haven't ever seen or heard of a fawn having horns his first year.... but then again I miss alot! muyloco

He is simply vertically challanged, otherwise known as the elusive midget deergrin

I have only seen one deer like him about 8 years ago on our place. Had the body size of a button buck, but had 6" spikes. confused2

Early fawn from this year. Good start to a young-un though.

I would say he was this year's fawn. I hunted public land once where someone shot a spike just like that that was aged at 6 months old. The biologists said that it's unusual, but happens.

In my experience it is not possible for a buck fawn born this year to grow antlers that will harden out this year. That would mean he would have been born with nubs already and start to grow them immediately. But a buck fawn can grow nubs as he ages into the fall and get longer as the season goes on. I have seen them after the first of the year when they have polished off the tips of the velvet nubs with white cartlage showing. It will not be hardened antler though just cartlage. If it is hardened antler he will be over a yr old.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one paying attention at the Ft. Worth Zoo.

Good, we all agree then. He's either this years or last years fawn, small or big for his age, he may or may not amount to anything, and he may or may not be a dik-dik. loco_too

Fawn don't grow any horns at all for their first year. If you disagree look it up.
