Guy I work with lives on the border of some woods. Along with his kids, he's been finding a lot of animal heads in his lawn. Mostly rodents, body is always missing. Yesterday they found a cat head.
My guess was an owl, but I said it might have been a stray coyote. He's a little concerned, but I told him a coyote wouldn't attack a person and if it is stray dogs, they wouldn't keep leaving the heads. Owl is my guess.
Thoughts?

Owl or bobcat.
Coyote won't leave anything. It's nothing that is big enough to hurt his girls.

Thoughts? FYI, there have been many cases of coyotes attacking humans -- especially kids, sometimes with fatal results.

Trail camera will narrow the guesses down. My guess would be owl also if they are small animals parts in the yard. He should be able to see it around right at dark if it is an owl.

FYI, there have been many cases of coyotes attacking humans -- especially kids, sometimes with fatal results. There have been 2 documented cases of coyotes killing humans since 1981. I consider that rare enough to call a non-issue.

In my younger years of running traplines, an occasional rabbit would somehow find its way into a trap, owls would hammer them just about every time and would also get skunks. Odd thing is when the good part is tied down by the trap they would take the head and leave the rest. Working in the oilfield over the years I've found quite a few partially eaten carcasses the owls have left on the tanks or walkway, also almost every one was decapatated, occasionally you would find the head laying underneath the walkway.

I consider that rare enough to call a non-issue. There's "documented" and undocumented... At any rate, it wasn't a non-issue to the parents of the child that was dragged off a porch and killed in the street... not far from where I used to live. Things like that tend to alter your perspective... and sharpen your aim where coyotes are concerned.
