I disagree. You can shoot slugs out of a smooth bore. I did it for years with an Ithica model 37 with an IC barrel. You do get better accurace with a rifled barrel but you don't need one. Be sure and shoot several manufacturers slugs and they will all pattern differently.

My buddy kills hogs all the time with slugs out of his smooth bore 870.

from what I have read some Sabbath slugs don't shoot right from smooth bore and rifled slugs don't shoot right from rifled barrels . and I should use and improved choke for slugs.even though it is safe to use a modified choke and to just say not to use a full cause of the potental of blowing the end off ..

Chad, I would definitely use an IC barrel or an open bore cylinder barrel. If you have a choke system on your gun then you can get an IC tube and you'll be ok. If not you can get the barrel cul back a couple inches and have tubes installed. If you go this route check out Briley tubes out of Houston. They go great work.

They also make rifled slugs to shoot from smooth bores...! that may help with accuracy. pics of your gun would be cool!

Shells loaded with Foster-type slugs are made to shoot from smooth bore shotguns years before rifled shotgun barrels became popular. Still loaded today.
Brenneke and sabot type slugs do better in rifled barrels.
Match the slug type to the barrel type and you'll be fine.

I have shot both rifled and sabot slugs out of a rifled barrel with good results. You can shoot both out of a smooth bore too, but if you want accuracy out of a smooth bore then you need the rifled slugs.
You can shoot slugs through a modified choke, but improved cylinder is recomended for best acuracy.
Slugs are devestating! The 20 ga slugs are acutaly suposed to perform better on game because they have a smaller surface area and pnetrate better.

I know a guy that hunted deep cover woods for many years with 12 gauge slugs. He swears that every deer he has ever taken was a drop dead on the spot kill. I know he was using rifled slugs. I just don't know if it was with an open cylinder bore or improved cylinder.

Improved Cylinder works best..Depending on brand of gun, it will be marked on the tube or have hash marks, 5 marks = IC choke. If you don't shoot it too much you should be fine. If you do shoot the heck out of it, get a slug barrel...

They actually have a rifled choke if the theory makes sense to you. Otherwise, the IC usually is best with smooth bore but you won't know until you try a few.
I actually find the best for my budget to be foster slugs through a rifled barrel in my 18 1/2" 20 gauge 870. I tried the sabots and they were about the same as the fosters at 100 yards for me but man are they high dollar.
They do drop a deer quick. I actually thought about scoping it and using it exclusively these days. I've never hurt the bore with buckshot or birdshot either.

I had ask Remington about this subject and they said the same thing. I was trying to find the email to confirm it. They said firing a slug through any tube will not arm the firearm. But, the less the restriction, the more accurate the shot. Personally, I'm not gonna try anything more then a modified.
