Has anybody seen a whitetail jump a high fence? Our rancher called us today and said that he saw one of our deer jump the high fence today.

They do not jump it straight on very well as one might think. They usually hit the top of part of the fence and then momentum flips them over it on an 8' fence. When they learn to run parellel with the fence and jump it at a slight angle while in stride they can clear it very easily. I have heard of deer standing and not running jump a HF without much effort. A lot of HF is not 8' tall also. It is called deer proof but it really is not. Deer can jump it if they really wanted to.

I've seen young does and young bucks jump an 8' fence, but never a mature deer.

I feel more like I do now then I did when I got here.

I've seen in twice, well, three times actually. one deer jumped two fences.

the first was a young buck, he hit the fence and rolled over.

the second, a yearling doe, jumped the high fence on the right side of the road, crossed it and jumped the fence on the other side, both times like it was nothing.

truly a sight to see

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I saw 2 does jump an 8 ft fence once. The first one walked right up and jumped it just like a regular fence. Second one wasn't so sure and had to take a few steps but didn't have any probems.

Seen it happen several times. Young bucks and does as well as mature bucks up to 6 years old. It's more of a deterrant than a barrier.

Last year I watched a 1 1/2 year old buck jump into our place after several tries. I've also seen several deer hit the fence put never make it over. I ask a deer breeder one time if he had ever had any of his deer jump out and he told me that they don't know that they can jump that high. So maybe pen deer can't jump an 8 ft fence.

Yes I have. We had a deer jump our 8' fence and the 4' property line fence at the same time. The 8' fence is about 3' inside the property line fence

Seen them clear a 7 footer without much effort so an 8 footer is possible.

Yes I Have. I have a Ranch next to a high fence. The mid size deer will jump it but never seen a fully mature deer jump one. Boy oh boy have I wished a few of them would though. The big bucks just meander down the side of it. I have seen all types swim the river around a fence though.
I also talked to a helicopter pilot who counts deer in the area. He said they have lost several big deer that will break there necks trying to jump a fence. They will just flat out hit it, in panic. And they also get tyed up in them.

Seeing them jump a high fence is cool, but I am more impressed when I see does and fawns go between the strands on a barb wire fence at full speed without missing a step. They are amazing animals for sure.

That 2' of barbwire will be a death trap.

they have to be pressured, but they can do it. I watched three bucks jump a high fence around leakey several years ago all within a few minutes. I think it was a 7' fence though.

I've seen around 10 deer jump a high fence all in all.... pretty amazing every time they do it.

Ranchman is right. That barb wire is where they get caught in. I have never seen a deer get caught in net wire it is always the barb or barbless on top of the fence.

A few years ago we were helping to transport some whitetails to another ranch in the hill country. They had a soft release section in their ranch which was about 20 acres and we were going to release them into there. Well, the does came out and ran out about 100 yards and looked around. Then we released the buck. He flew out of the trailer right past the does, through the short mesquite brush and cedars and made a line straight to the fence on the other side and never stopped. The does went with him all the way and one after another they all jumped the fence flawlessly.
