I hunted down there for the last 3 years. There's definitely some big deer in that country. Big horns and big bodies. Big mature bucks will have approximately 18 inches from ear tip to ear tip so use that as a guide when estimating antler spread.
Those deer seem to respond better to tailgate feeders than stationary feeders. The rut occurs very late down there. It seems to peak the week after Christmas and continues through much of Jan.
Shout if you have any questions. I'll try to answer them. Whereabouts are you hunting? Which ranch, if you don't mind saying?
I hunted on the Hellen "La Mota" Ranch, about 20 miles south of Hebbronville.

We just got on a lease this year. It is right on the border of Jim Hogg and Duval county line (about 5 miles east of Hebbronville). So far it has been great. We have some really good deer on camera and have a great ranch hand that helps with feeders and water. We are heading down this weekend to pull cameras. I will post some picks next week. What part of town are you in?

Yes, I do and I also know that it doesn't have the same meaning today that it did when the ranch was founded in the 1800's.

Nowadays it's a reference to marijuana. As I'm told, in the old days it loosely translates into "low hill" or "butte".
The south and west sides of the ranch are on an escarpment to the Rio Grande Valley. The escarpment forms a hill range.
On clear cool days, from the tops of la mota you could see the mountains down around Monterrey Mexico. The ranch is named for these low hills that form the escarpment.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Yep, the cholos corrupted the word. That area is nice, far enough away from the Gulf where it doesn't get quite as humid as further south or southeast.
