had the hog dogs run into one near vernon a couple years back. Six dogs got hit and the catch dog was accidently turned lose and actually caught it.(never had one to trash brake on) All the dogs made it but it was a very long night getting them quills out. One of the guys that helped us with the dogs was half indian and kept all the quills, he said they were worth money(they use them for ceremonial head dresses)

Are they rare or something ? I see them all the time...just like coons. I've seen 'um in Hondo at my feeders .. seen 'um in spring branch down off the Guadalupe River and even out at my buddies in Uvalde. Don't see them every time or in groups .. just here and there once or twice a month....

Not really that rare. just real scattered in their distribution. We have seen as high as a dozen animals in one night on the alfalfa fields out at the ranch where we hunt.

I think for the most part, they just go some what unnoticed, until you see one run over on the highway or walk right up on one.

A friend of mine shared a tree with one last deer season out around San Angelo. First one he'd seen out there.

We hunt in kendal county, and have shot 3 so far this year and one last year. We have hunted the place for 17 years, and the one last year was the first one we have ever seen on the place, Land lady says she dont like em so shoot em.

Been a couple of mentions of Coleman Co, San Angelo and San Saba - we are in that general area and saw two this weekend.

By the way, they can throw their quills...when you hit them with a 30-06!

Bigbow shot one in Runnels co. two weekends ago. I think his tally is now 3 in 1.5 years. We see them a lot in the Winter in Runnels co.

With an arrow...We were just talking about that a few days ago. Would never have believed it if I hadn't seen it. Should have known a bow that Wes used to shoot couldn't even kill a porky!!

Cool Hand and I were just talking about porkys this past Tuesday. The following day I met another forum guy that is up around Cross Plains and he brought them up too! The only one I've ever seen had the "mange" stuff and it was down in Kinney Co.

That's easy. CHC can explain that. They're just like a black mountain lion!

I do have an explanation.

The lighter colored porky is normally colored.

If you click on the picture and when it takes you to the link where you can view the picture at its normal size, if you look, the lighter colored animal is setting up facing toward the darker colored animal.

The darker colored animal is a normal colored porky, but it is facing away from the camera, and has assumed a defensive posture with its hair and quills raised.

When they do that, they appear much darker than they do when their hair and quills are in their normal position.

I think the reason for this, is that the outer hair and quills sunbleach and the hair and quills underneath stay darker.

It is interesting to see that color change especially at night when shining a spotlight on them.

I an sure everyone thinks I am full of sh_t, but I believe that is why there is the difference between the two animals in that picture. AJMO.

The burning question in my mind is, did you learn that many people feel that I am full of sh_t, or that because of the way the hair is standing the porky will be a different color.

Honestly they can be eaten. I will have to check with some of the various game departments, but used to, many years back, in some of the Mountain states and the Northern states along the Canadian border, it was against the law to kill a porky unless you were using it as an emergency food source. They were considered survival food.

We have seen two this year already on our lease. One was right under a feeder and I nearly ran over the fellow when driving up. Panhandle area.

Saw chunks of quils and fur all around one side of my feeder pen where something tore it up pretty good. Maybe a yote? Ranch is in Sterling Co.

I see them all the time. I saw one up close and almost too personal last weekend.

A buddy was trying out a new britney spaniel last year. It found two porcupines and a skunk. It is still looking for it's first quail. We even shot a quail and had to chase down the dog to put the quail in it's mouth...only to have to dog spit it out. Worthless mut.

Porcupines eat deer sheds. They like the minerals.
