My luckiest shot was with a bow. I was out hunting a place near Decatour TX. A Red Stag and his herd of ladies came into a field. He was at 36 yards. Mind you this is my first time ever to hunt with a bow. I had been practicing like crazy but never at a live target with a 5x5 Red Stag during a roar! My first arrow hit him in the shoulder and he dropped to his chest. As he was struggling to stand back up i shot another arrow through his back/ spine and into the lung and heart. Needless to say, no tracking necessary. he was DRT! That was a cool and lucky shot. BTW- i was hunting with a Bear White Tail II. I had to aim the arrow towards the sky for it to make it 36 yards. It was so slow that i remember shooting and saying "come on, come on" LOL

Best pistol shot I ever made was when I was in the Border Patrol. I was cutting sign in northern Starr County and was going through an area where on my left there was heavy brush, but on the right were open, freshly plowed fields.

I was driving slowly, looking for tracks, when a coyote popped out of the brush on my left and was hauling, for all he was worth, straight into the plowed field. I got the Ram Charger stopped, stood in the driver's door and sighted in on him with my S&W 586 with the 4" barrel. He's running flat out the whole time.

I got him lined up and elevated the front sight and squeezed off. The bullet hit right in front of him. The coyote then made his mistake, instead of turning to his left he turned at 90 degrees (even his body looked like it bent 90 degrees right behind the rib cage). I knew I had the proper elevation and so as he is now running parallel to me it was a matter of swinging the muzzle through him and getting the lead right. I got in front of him with the muzzle almost a full body length and let go again. The next thing I saw was him rolling in a big old cloud of dust for 10 or 15 feet. Bullet broke his spine a couple of inches in front of the pelvis and he couldn't use the hind legs anymore. I went out to where he was crawling and finished him off with a head shot from about 10 feet away. An aside was from where he was first hit to the spot where he quit rolling there was an almost solid line of squirted coyote poop.

My pace if I stretch it out just a little is exactly 3 feet. I paced it off and the coyote was 109 paces away from the truck. A 327 foot pistol shot at a moving target was pretty good. I was using duty loads of Federal .357 mag, 125 gr. semi-jacketed hollowpoints.

This was back in the day when you could shoot at stuff and not have to account for every round.

I try my best not to take luck shots at anything other than nuisance animals like coyotes and hogs.

But perhaps my luckiest shot was aiming and knocking the nail out of piece of plywood that was holding the target paper at a distance of 100 yards. Heck, my rifle isn't accurate enough to hit the head of a nail, much less my shooting skills.

This was 20 yrs ago when I was in the Marines. I was leading my squad through a live fire training course. A pop up siloete target came up at about two hundred yards. I told my point man to take the shot. He missed and I had someone else take an attempt. They said the target must be broken and would'nt fall.After three misses and a few choice words I said get out of the way. I rapidly turned and slung one down range not really expecting to do much better. The target dropped. Later when we went to reset the target one of the guys said "wow, one shot right in the head"! It was pure luck but i did not let them know. I just said thats the way you do it. From that point on the thought I was the man.

Alaska, 1993, King Salmon, caribou hunt in the snowy tundra. Did not realize how flat and barren the ground was. Shot a caribou at like 600 yards. Took the first shot and saw the bullet hit at the caribou's feet. Also had a strong crosswind. Ended shooting the caribou in the butt because I aimed about 2 feet above its' back. Lucky stupid shot. But at the time I was a young kid from New Orleans hunting in AK. I was in the Air Force.

Alaska, 1994, Nebesna, Dall Sheep. Missed the first shot, second shot was at a sheep running full speed at about 75 yards. Perfect shot in the front shoulder. Not a dumb shot, but a lucky one. But I often wonder when I say lucky bc I have been shooting guns all my life. Perhaps it was skill? Just saying lucky bc I am a modest person.
