I was an anti terror instructor in Bremerton WA about 10 years ago. Most of the guys I worked with were former Marine snipers and were incredible shots…..with a rifle. We went out on some public land one time to shoot and goof off. Some of the guys brought their wives and/or girl friends. I was at the river with the lead instructor for the team across the sound, he and his wife (former Navy Corpsman, they met while he was a DI) were skipping rocks. I had a Colt Delta with me and decided to try to hit one of the rocks as it skipped. I had been ribbing the snipers that they may be great with a long gun but shite with a pistol. About my 3rd shot I actually hit a rock about half way across the river. Buddies wife starts saying “that was a great shot, can you do that honey?” after a long pause and more prompting by the wife Larry says “F no woman, nobody can make that shot!” Needless to say I did not try to repeat the shot but assured everyone there that is was skill not luck Same pistol a few years ago I hit a duck in the head at 40 yards first shot. My lucky gun only comes out on special occasions now!

My luckiest shot was with my .17HMR on a crow. He was sitting on a stump about 175 yds out when I let loose the first round which hit right below his feet (I was being cocky and rushed the shot). Anyways, my buddies start giving me a hard time for missing so I smart off "oh yeah well watch this". At this point the crow is up and flying from right to left so I get him in the scope and squeeze the trigger. I wish I had a picture of their faces when that crow fell out of the sky dead.

My buddie and I were out with .22's just wasting ammunition. We were probably 13-14 years of age at the time. I had a cheap Tasco scope that was 4X on my Model 60. Way, way, out in the distance I see a squirrel running across the path. I tell my buddy to stop. We start watching trees on that side of the path for the squirrel to come up. We finally spot the squirrel climbing up the tree and my buddy wants to make a break for it and start running up there so he could shoot it. Well, as he takes off running, I level the old .22 on the squirrel, aim a little high, and let one go. My buddy starts screaming about why I shot and scared it off. I tell him the squirrel is dead. He tells me yea right.. Well, we get up to the tree, and there lays the squirrel at the base.. That shot was probably 175-200 yards. Even with my 4X scope, that squirrel looked like a spec on the tree.
A hog is nothing more than a bullet receptacle.

Loooong time ago. It wasn't my shot, but I called the placement.
Took a buddy spotlighting for the first time. He was a relative newby to shooting and firearms. We caught some raccoon eyes shining in a tree 50 or so yards away. Gave him the gun and the coon turned his head. Told my friend to aim dead center on the light and pull the trigger. He did. End result: his first dead raccoon and a coon-tail antenna cover for his truck.
Other than that, I have never missed what I was aiming at - whether it was a blade of grass under a deer, or blue sky behind a dove.

My luckiest shot was with a bow. I was out hunting a place near Decatour TX. A Red Stag and his herd of ladies came into a field. He was at 36 yards. Mind you this is my first time ever to hunt with a bow. I had been practicing like crazy but never at a live target with a 5x5 Red Stag during a roar! My first arrow hit him in the shoulder and he dropped to his chest. As he was struggling to stand back up i shot another arrow through his back/ spine and into the lung and heart. Needless to say, no tracking necessary. he was DRT! That was a cool and lucky shot. BTW- i was hunting with a Bear White Tail II. I had to aim the arrow towards the sky for it to make it 36 yards. It was so slow that i remember shooting and saying "come on, come on" LOL

My lucky shot came a couple of years ago with an old bow. Ever since i could rememer my grandfather would pull out his bow when I was around and would draw right in front of me to show off his strength. I never could draw back that bow until i was around 18, but when i did he gave it to me. I never really shot it since it was just the bow, no sights, rest, anything..but for some odd reason i had it with me when my grandfather was with me feeding livestock when a cottontail comes out and stops at about 30yds. he looks at me and says "I used to hit rabbits in the head with that bow". So i took one of the old aluminum arrows and out of the quiver and let it fly.. i never thought the arrow would find its mark but it did, after that my grandfather never questioned my marksmanship. my grandfather has passed since then but i have never tried dupicating the shot..

Me and some buddies riding around the ranch about 10 years ago. We see a skunk going up the hill across a big draw. We all threw $5 in a hat and took 1 shot I was last and nail it with my 270 win. Got out a laser rangefinder and it was 396 yards. I shot offhanded and just snapped one off. They still think I'm the best shot they know. I couldn't do that again in a 100 years!

Best/Luckiest/Worst shot I ever made was all one in the same and happened 45 years ago when I was 8 years old. Momma Mallard always put pecans out in a bird bath in our back yard for the squirrels to eat. I was in the back yard with my Big Chief bow…(you know those little fiberglass re-curve jobs with the blunt arrows)….one summer day flinging arrows at anything and everything and suddenly a big fat squirrel hops up in that bird bath and starts to munch down on the free pecans. Well, ‘ole Smiling Mallard made a very effective 10 yard stalk and unleashed a monstrously long 4 or 5 yard shot that hit said squirrel square in the head killing him instantly. Being a kid I was absolutely thrilled and ran into the house excitedly telling Papa Mallard and Momma Mallard of my shooting prowess. Best shot ever because everyone knows you couldn’t hit anything with those bows using your hand as an arrow rest and that incredible 15 fps arrow speed. Luckiest shot ever….for the same aforementioned reasons. And Worst shot ever because Momma Mallard was some kind of pizzed that I had killed one of her “pet” squirrels. My elation quickly turned to tears when Momma Mallard gave me several swats to the back side and then took my beloved bow and my Daisy BB gun away from me for three weeks. I remember like yesterday though, my dad walking by me as I sat dejectedly on the couch and saying “Nice shot Bud”.

I have two but one was just amazing because I had no idea I was capable of a shot like it and the other was the worst shot I have ever made on an animal. The first was actually two weeks ago. We got up to a bachelor herd of kudu and I shot one at 450 yards while it was standing behind a bush. It hit low and right behind the shoulder only running about 15 yards. The second shot was an aoudad 2 years ago. Our place has free range aoudad and went out one morning and had a ewe sitting on a cliffside at about 250 yards. Shot at it in prone with like a 30 mph crosswind and hit its back left leg. It then proceeded to fall about 80-90 feet off the side of the cliff and I had to hike down into the canyon in order to dispatch it. Both of these crazy shots mentioned were done with a savage .30-06 with a 180 gr. Winchester XP3 bullet.

Inky Doc failed to mention one of his other greatest shots. We were hunting together when he shot at this buck from the stand. He went looking for a blood trail but didnt find one. He came up on the buck, shot as it was turning. Hit it right in the rear end. Bullet went up, around its ribs, then thru its heart without touching any other organs. Figured out that the way to a mans heart is thru his stomach but the way to a deers heart is thru its butt lol. Good times.

Best pistol shot I ever made was when I was in the Border Patrol. I was cutting sign in northern Starr County and was going through an area where on my left there was heavy brush, but on the right were open, freshly plowed fields.
I was driving slowly, looking for tracks, when a coyote popped out of the brush on my left and was hauling, for all he was worth, straight into the plowed field. I got the Ram Charger stopped, stood in the driver's door and sighted in on him with my S&W 586 with the 4" barrel. He's running flat out the whole time.
I got him lined up and elevated the front sight and squeezed off. The bullet hit right in front of him. The coyote then made his mistake, instead of turning to his left he turned at 90 degrees (even his body looked like it bent 90 degrees right behind the rib cage). I knew I had the proper elevation and so as he is now running parallel to me it was a matter of swinging the muzzle through him and getting the lead right. I got in front of him with the muzzle almost a full body length and let go again. The next thing I saw was him rolling in a big old cloud of dust for 10 or 15 feet. Bullet broke his spine a couple of inches in front of the pelvis and he couldn't use the hind legs anymore. I went out to where he was crawling and finished him off with a head shot from about 10 feet away. An aside was from where he was first hit to the spot where he quit rolling there was an almost solid line of squirted coyote poop.
My pace if I stretch it out just a little is exactly 3 feet. I paced it off and the coyote was 109 paces away from the truck. A 327 foot pistol shot at a moving target was pretty good. I was using duty loads of Federal .357 mag, 125 gr. semi-jacketed hollowpoints.
This was back in the day when you could shoot at stuff and not have to account for every round.

I try my best not to take luck shots at anything other than nuisance animals like coyotes and hogs.
But perhaps my luckiest shot was aiming and knocking the nail out of piece of plywood that was holding the target paper at a distance of 100 yards. Heck, my rifle isn't accurate enough to hit the head of a nail, much less my shooting skills.

Heck, my rifle isn't accurate enough to hit the head of a nail, much less my shooting skills. When my Son was about 6, we were shooting a Remington Speedmaster at the rifle range. He was shooting good groups and had been shooting for a while. Then he shoots and the top left corner of the target folds down. I'm thinking the brass tack fell out. On the next shot, the top right corner falls and the target folds in half. I look at him, he looks at me, and I just shake my head. While this was "only" 50 yards, he was "only" six years old. After he got all grown up, I watched him shoot the head off a snake with his Colt Delta Elite at well over 50 feet. He got all those skills from his Mom.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

This was 20 yrs ago when I was in the Marines. I was leading my squad through a live fire training course. A pop up siloete target came up at about two hundred yards. I told my point man to take the shot. He missed and I had someone else take an attempt. They said the target must be broken and would'nt fall. After three misses and a few choice words I said get out of the way. I rapidly turned and slung one down range not really expecting to do much better. The target dropped. Later when we went to reset the target one of the guys said "wow, one shot right in the head"! It was pure luck but i did not let them know. I just said thats the way you do it. From that point on the thought I was the man.

Alaska, 1993, King Salmon, caribou hunt in the snowy tundra. Did not realize how flat and barren the ground was. Shot a caribou at like 600 yards. Took the first shot and saw the bullet hit at the caribou's feet. Also had a strong crosswind. Ended shooting the caribou in the butt because I aimed about 2 feet above its' back. Lucky stupid shot. But at the time I was a young kid from New Orleans hunting in AK. I was in the Air Force.
Alaska, 1994, Nebesna, Dall Sheep. Missed the first shot, second shot was at a sheep running full speed at about 75 yards. Perfect shot in the front shoulder. Not a dumb shot, but a lucky one. But I often wonder when I say lucky bc I have been shooting guns all my life. Perhaps it was skill? Just saying lucky bc I am a modest person.
Mike nice shots, you've been on some nice hunts.
